Title: I'm a Naughty Boy!
Post by: claremont on September 16, 2012, 01:50:44 pm
I stopped at a flea market type shop yesterday and found that they had an arcade game in the back room, out of sight. Naturally I had to take a look and was amazed... and disappointed.

The game condition is unbelievable. The play meter says 700 plays. Not a scratch or mark on it. Literally the nicest cabinet I have ever seen on a 1981 arcade machine. Even the bottom front corners are sharp! The inside is nearly spotless. Everything is present from the wiring to the coin bucket. This thing is not even dusty. Joystick was tight as could be. The buttons felt super solid. Got it home, plugged it in and it started right up perfectly. Played it for 10 minutes and decided I did not care if I ever played it again.

Unfortunately, the game is Jaleco Naughty Boy. On of the biggest arcade fails I have ever come across.

Oh well, for $100 it was mine, and I will not lose a moment's sleep over modding it!

Claremont, any chance you could send me the circuit board? I have a dedicated Naughty Boy machine in my basement that has board problems.

Why would he want to pull the board from a nearly perfect game?

this was a pretty good indicator.

Even if the game sucks, that's pretty much a home use only game.  I'm sure another collector in the area would trade a good potential MAME cab for it without hesitation.

Of course, without a pic or a location and being his first post, it could be a troll.

Yeah, he pretty much said he was going to mame it, at least the board could save mine (which I already saved from being turned into a 60 in 1).

Mine appears to be the earlier Jaelco while the one above is the cinematronics version. I could have that backwards, though, since I cant find another example that matches mine. They all look like the one earlier in this thread.

I got a call back from the original owner. (It was a consignment type place, so I paid the shop, not the owner). It turns out that he won the game at an arcade, and the only plays on the machine (at the time) were during the contest it took to win it.

By the way, not my first post, regardless of what the counter says!

My apologies for the suggestion you may be a troll.  That would not have been the first time it happened around here.

Please don't MAME that.  That is a perfect game.  Find someone that will buy it or trade for a more suitable candidate.

Where are you located?  We're very spread out.  If you're anywhere near me I will buy that and donate it to Funspot.

Would a troll brag about bagging a Naughty Boy? If I were a troll it would be a Tron Environmental.

I am in Rochester, NY... unfortunately.

I took some 401 to the side of the cabinet. It looked really good before, but now there is a ton of nicotine off the sides and looks even better. I will probably die sooner after cleaning it, but cleaning and repairing over 400 games over the years it was bound to happen anyway.

And with the stupid verification steps after each post, this will probably be among my last. I am blind in one eye and the verification images are not worth the effort. It takes me an average of 8 tries to get it right. Making the forum harder for thousands of users so that a few moderators have an easier life is bass ackwards.

Claremont - If it's any consolation, I think the verification turns off after 5 posts.  Hope that it doesn't drive you away.

Good to know, Scott.

I am a paid moderator on two boards, and operate a few of my own. I know the spam headache completely. I just choose not to have my members pay the price.

Rochester isn't all that far.  If you are willing to try we may be able to find a way to get this game to Funspot and also get you an empty cabinet of whatever type you want.  People have gone to far more effort to get games to Funspot than this.

I have no qualms about smashing cabinets and even I'd save that thing.  Yeah, it's in nice shape because it's a bad game but c'mon.

 :stupid

Those don't pop that often, it'd be a shame to harvest it when there are so many others out there in need of a refurb.

Plus that's not a good potential MAME cabinet.  Not much room for controls there and it won't take much of a monitor.

I'll set it down to like 2 posts. For what it's worth, it's not making life easier for a few moderators that was the goal. If an easy life was my goal I wouldn't run a forum at all :) Users complain about spammers, so when new options came up to combat spammers I was happy to try them out. The few minutes a day it takes to nuke spam from the forum doesn't bother me. Thanks for the feedback.

Nice find on the cabinet by the way.

*edit* it was already set to 3. You aren't still seeing it are you?

No Saint, I am not seeing it. It did stop after the third post. I know I am more sensitive to those dang captchas than most people. I was serious when I said it takes me a ton of tries to get it right. With some captchas you can turn down the difficulty level, that might help some, too.

On some of my boards I just ask the answer to "What is two plus two?" if they get the answer wrong they are probably a bot, or they are so dumb that you dont want them on your board anyway!  ;D

As for the machine, I never a butcher anything, although I can see where I implied that above. Whatever changes I make are always reversible. For example I would remove this control panel and set it aside, and fabricate a new panel to go in its place. This particular machine is not Jamma, so the entire wiring harness would come out and be set aside with the original board set. So, ten years from now, when Jaleco Naughty Boy becomes that lost gem that everyone has to have... I will be ready.

Any game in that shape is a lost gem.  Can't force you to sell it so I can get it to the museum, of course, but this one should be sent to Funspot.

Yeah, that's a special cabinet.
