Title: ELECTRICAL: LED powering via PSU
Post by: DrChek on September 05, 2012, 02:05:23 pm
Simple question (I'm no electrician):

I have two of these LEDs (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=82_239_240&products_id=1254) that I need to wire for my coin door.

They are rated as 6.3V. Can I power them with the 5V from my computer PSU's molex connector like this?

I realize that they will be dimmer driven by 5V as opposed to 6.3V, but how bad will it be? If bad, than what do I need to do to use the 12V source from the molex connector?

Yeah, that should work. The link doesnt tell if the dropping resistors are built into the base, but it looks like they are.
If you needed dropping resistors, you could adjust the resistors to account for the lower voltage, thus same brightness, but I dont think 1.3 volts is going to make that big a difference in brightness anyway.

These are the bases (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=461) I have and I think you're right.

I fgured it would work as I've seen similar LEDs listed as 5-6.3V on other sites.

Definitely no problem with your proposed setup.

You won't have any problem with brightness running 6.3v LEDs on 5v.

I run 12v LED buttons off 5v from USB.  They don't burn your retinas, but they do light the admin buttons quite nicely.
