I am trying to set the button config for Vanguard in Mame. I have the layout just like the game. Can anyone tell me how the buttons are numbered as in 1,2,3, and 4 on the control panel? I guess to make it not so confusing,,,in the mame game menu, would button 1 be up, down, etc. and so on. Tried a few different combos but can't seem to get it right.

keep trying you can do its only 4 buttons :lol If you cant figure it this Hobby might not be for you! :lol

I have always played Vanguard with 2 sticks rather than 4 buttons. I feel I get better aiming response that way.

| P1 Button 2 | Fire Right |
| P1 Button 3 | Fire Down |
| P1 Button 4 | Fire Up |
If you tried various random combinations, you're not approaching the problem the best way. Instead, try this:
- Start the game
- Press {tab} to bring up the menu
- Select "Input (this Game)", {enter}
- Select "P1 Button 1", {enter}
- Press your Start button
- Press {tab} to exit the menu
Now, press your Start button, and see which action takes place. In Vanguard, the ship fires to the left. Go back into the menu, and set "P1 Button 1" to the correct panel button. Repeat for the other buttons.
By dealing with only one unknown action at a time, you eliminate any confusion.

Thanks. I ended up assigning nothing to all four and then doing one button at a time and marking them down. Should have thought of that in the first place. Thanks
