Title: How small is too small?
Post by: Unstupid on August 27, 2012, 07:44:42 pm
All,

Working on my next project, but wanted to get your opinions on the size of a machine.  At what point do you believe the size of the machine will hinder your ability to play it?  Just curious...    ???

Anything smaller than a standard Midway mini or Atari cabaret is going to be hard to play on.

Scaling down to save space doesn't REALLY work all that well as you can't cut out more than a few inches of width or depth and making the machine shorter doesn't save any space at all.

Like you built that awesome little Neo Geo guy, but once you put it on a stool it takes up about the same amount of space as a standard mini.

No I'm talking smaller.....   My Neo has a 15" screen and regulat controlls.  The box physically doesn't move when you play the games...  But I'm thinking of going smaller, but I don't want to go so small that I have to use non-arcade hardware or be so small that the whole machine would be moving around while you play it,  ya know something like this:

I want to make the smallest machine possible while still using real arcade joysticks but I don't wand the size of the machine to keep someone from going after a kill screen in Donkey Kong.  So what's the smallest, but fully playable machine that you have used?

Bender's DK is slightly smaller at 1:8 scale than my micro SW at 1:6 (12 inches high).  My gauntlet is intermittantly playable (still some niggling 4p control issues) but at 1:6 scale I think it's fine.  If you do 1:4 scale or 1:3 scale you should still be in the easy to play and see everything range without dipping into the headaches associated with the micro builds.

I was just about to joke about the 7" arcade MACHINES that some people are making lol. Realistically going with a cab any smaller than a 13" screen (MAYBE a 9" with really cramped controls) is going to involve buttons that are not official size and limited to one player. But I guess your only looking for the smallest playable one player cabinet with full size controls.  :)
