for all these guys/boys using female (let alone female anime character) avatars?
If you're a fan of something, isn't that what signatures and titles and such are for?....
-
Meh, I'm not actually a zombie pirate, I assume they aren't actually doe eyed nancies.
-
No, not really.
-
Well we won't be using real pictures of ourselves! :o

I think it's interesting you assume the sex of the individual. ;)
TBH I haven't really paid much attention to the anime avatars. Who else is using one?

Nope, I love stealing, drinking and hookers but I wouldn't put that in my signature.

Me, for one... but it could be argued that Lain isn't female, much less human... ;)

I really am a rabbit.

And, I'm much more creepy looking than my avatar.

The same could be said for mine.

Well what kind of avatar are we talking about?
Do you mean like forum avatars? Because I don't pay any attention to those. If your screen name is Phil and you have an avatar of a 16 year old anime chick I can figure out that you probably aren't a girl. ;)
Now as for game avatars (wow, second life, ect) yeah it's a bit creepy, mostly because those games have "teh sexz" and that's just false advertising. Then agian, I find that genre of game to be a little creepy in of itself, so maybe I'm not the best judge.
Just for the record though, all the avatars I've used on this forum (Shangs and Johnny) were picked because the characters reminded me of myself either physically or personality wise.
I guess there are two people in this world, people who want to be somebody else online, and people who are just fine being themselves. There is a reason that Howard Casto's screen name is Howard Casto. ;) I don't think that screen names are a bad thing or anything like that, I just never saw the point. I'm me and the forums I frequent aren't anything embarrassing, so I'll just use my name. The same goes for avatars.... I like the funny ones, but they get real old real fast and if you change your avatar too often people get confused. So I just pick one that kind of reminds me of myself and stick with it... until it gets so old that I can't stand it anymore.

Just noticed that according to my profile I'm a female and live inside of Haruman so I do find that a little odd but so be it ;)

I almost always preferred to play with the woman fighters in fighting games. Doesn't mean Im a girl, or want to be a girl.
I just really Love em. :)
Funny you should mention that. You screen name always reminds me of Xiaoyu from tekken.

Avatars were intended to represent the person who is using it. Some of us just tend to use original content for ours'. Like mine.

Some of us are using our own pics too you know...

This topic crops up pretty regularly on game related forums. Especially in regards to MMO's. I go back and forth with avatars - male, female, lizard. Doesn't really matter to me.
In games that are 3rd person I tend to create female characters. If I'm going to stare at a figure for 30+ hours I want it to be attractive to my eye. First person, I don't tend to care since I'm not looking at it. Skyrim and games similar - you don't really look at your character - who cares what it looks like?
In MMO's I tend to flip a coin. Since other folks will be looking at you I tend to pick whatever gender I feel looks coolest. This tends to depend on the race/species I will play. Since I'm not one of these nitwads that sits around in general chat offering to "cyber for gold" it doesn't impact my play style at all.
As far as forum avatars... does it really have any impact on you? Does your response to a person's post change if you think it's male or female? It shouldn't. So does it really matter what the pic is? Hell, maybe I should use a picture of a red swingline stapler...

But you're prettier as a brunette, jim....I mean.....
And, I'm much more creepy looking than my avatar.

That's actually a little Chuckie-ish.
Uhnnnnn, well, I guess if your avatar is saying something, then fine. I don't have anything to say beyond what I say. So I don't have one.
