My MAME text on the startup of the emulation is scrambled and not readable. Even if I go to the keyboard input , it's scrambled as well. Some letters are fine, others are blocks or random shapes. I'm running MAME32 since I'm a MAME novice and don't know much about command lines either, so I need some sort of GUI. Any help on what the problem is?

It sounds like you are trying to run a font not supported by mame. I'm not as familiar with the guied mame, but see if there is a font option in there somewhere.
Or it could be a regional issue. Where are you at?
Barring that, it's probably some wierd rendering thing unique to your system, and it could be difficult to troubleshoot.
btw unless it's an oooooooold version of mame, you are running mameui. They changed the name ages ago when mame dropped dos support to avoid confusion.
Pics would probably help.

sounds more like some intel graphics chipset with crap drivers ;-)

Ok, so what was the solution? I've been looking at this for 2 days & can't figure it out. Help appreciated.

OK, figured it out. Switched d3d to ddraw in the video settings of the mame.ini
Guess I just needed some more reading....and more patience. ;)

Sorry it's taken a bit to get back on here. Life gets in the way of hobbies sometimes. Anyhow I have no knowledge of how or why but changing the setting from d3d to ddraw worked for me as well. Thanks everyone.

Haze pointed out the problem. If you want to use d3d make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. If you do and it's still occuring you will need to use Direct Draw.
