Time for me to get some. Are there any packages that don't require an annual license? Any suggestions from those of you who have use different packages?
I'm mostly concerned about funky You Tube videos with bad language at this point, but in a year I'm sure I'll need to really tighten down search results. You never know what's going to come up if you type something like "Cute Boys" or some such seemingly innocent thing.

I personally use one called Safe Eyes (http://www.internetsafety.com/safe-eyes-parental-control-software.php (http://www.internetsafety.com/safe-eyes-parental-control-software.php)), but yeah, yearly cost.

Yeah, the daughter was looking for "cute puppies" on youtube and wound up seeing a lot of things she shouldn't have...

I've got k9 on my daughter's pc.

it's pretty good, parent settable, and free.

OpenDNS is pretty good although I don't know how well it will work on specific YouTube videos.

Seconded on k9. My son HATES that I have this up and running on his computer. I've caught him a couple times trying to figure out what the password is that I used for it.

I assume these are all client side on the PCs? What about something that blocks sites for Ipods? Anything on the router that can be used besides blocking individual sites, times of day for any traffic, etc?

I can remember crossing my fingers and downloading that stuff at 2400 baud. Now all I have to do is Google Image Search anything and I get hardcore.
God bless the 21st century.
I remember storing pr0n on 3.25" 1.44MB floppies..... :-\

I sent a donation(probably written in crayon) to my local BBS to unlock the adult section

I've got 8 inches.
...
I was considering K9, so good to hear a couple of votes for that.
Open DNS: Can I allow full access on some computers (ie mine and the wife)? I don't want to restrict everything, just a couple computers.

My kids want to watch user made minecraft related videos on youtube. Most of the time they're fine but they're made by teenagers and you can go along for a while and then catch an F-bomb. Youtube safe mode does a good job with pron and violent stuff but misses these gaming related things a lot.

OpenDNS is not client side so it can be set up for anything accessing within your home. That being said, not much it will do outside of the home.

Third. I use K9 for my sons' PCs. Works great. They've been on the net about a year now with K9 and no issues of which I am aware.

Fourth. I put it on my oldest daughters laptop, it works really well. It's very configurable, you can easily set how much filtering / protection it applies. It's worth noting that most of the products out there have searchable workarounds so trust and responsibility still go hand in hand with whatever solution you choose. My daughter is happy to have it on her laptop, it means she can do any searches without worring about stumbling on nasties.
