Title: "View First Unread" feature on KLOV
Post by: PL1 on August 19, 2012, 12:37:56 pm
This post is a followup clarification to a PM for Sirwoogie.

I noticed that there is an "unread posts" button, but that brings up every unread post in every subforum.

One feature that makes KLOV easier to browse without missing posts is the "View First Unread" button that shows up when you open a thread.  Click on that button and it scrolls down to display the post. (changing pages as needed)

If a BYOAC thread is near the end of the page, you might miss the next-to-last reply when the last one starts to a new page, or you waste time paging back until you remember what you read last.

Can we implement this feature?

Screencap attached for illustration.

Edit:  Maybe put the "View First Unread" button in place of the "Go Down" button and remove the "Go Up" button at the bottom of the page.  Seems like those two do the exact same thing as the "Home" and "End" keys on a keyboard.   :dunno

17 months after posting this topic, I blundered into the answer today -- the "View First Unread" feature is already implemented and hiding in plain sight.   :lol

Click on the "new" icon ((http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/Themes/Yabb_SE_Classic_2/images/english/new.gif)) after the topic to jump to the first unread post in that thread.   ;D

Does this mean we're one step closer to Neph's Karma/Rep System (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,132870.0.html)?

Only if it's already implemented and nobody knows how to use it...well then yes.  If you imply that actual work will be done then *snicker* no.

Karma is easy to turn on. Do people really want it? Always seemed to me like it had the potential to be used as a club against people.

I would like to see it turned on.  Even though we do have a few asshats on the board, I think the number of responsible folks would over-ride them.  And a rep system would help newer folks see the asshats among the gems.

Well, crap like that is an excellent way to run me off again.  Please feel free to ponder that in your decision.

Why do you say that PBJ?  I'd expect you to end up with a pretty high karma/rep to be honest.  While you can be abrasive at times in off-topic threads, you seem to know your stuff when it comes right down to it and you don't hesitate to offer your knowledge when appropriate.  That's the kind of stuff I tend to up-vote.  All the sugar coating in the world doesn't mean squat if the person layering it on is clueless, and you aren't clueless.

Karma initiated in 5...4...3...

Hey, at least it won't take so long to nuke your posts this time  :laugh2:

Why do you say that PBJ?

What's a rep system going to accomplish?  It feels like the content around here is 99% opinions.  Do you really need your opinions validated?

No.  It is more of a class system.  The "buddies on here will "help themselves and each other" except for a few people on here that already have ultimate karma.  Let these people have their elitist attitude and this board will end up like that of KLOV.   ::)

One of the reasons I don't let people know that I'm a day walking Ginger.

....ah crap.

Now that brings up an interesting question, is there anyway a user or admin can track how many up votes they have, or show who's given them? What's to stop someone from just voting for themselves every hour?

You'd need a multi to upvote yourself.  Well, I can't upvote myself on the theme I'm using anyhow.
