Title: Looking for cunstructive criticism on custom marquee
Post by: Kbussler on August 16, 2012, 03:55:52 am
Took my first stab at some vector art just curios what you all think of my marquee for a weecade clone titled veecade. Please don't be too mean as Ive never used illustrator before this but any advice or thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Not sure if it's the PDF or not, but I see "VeeCade" twice (in custom vector font and in "regular" font), all messed up in spacing.

Could you upload a PNG or at least a JPEG to be sure we're seeing the right thing?

I like the background. Maybe see if you can stretch the "A" in front a little wider? Seems a bit thin compared to the other characters. Also, may want to make text more centered. Also, reduce space between "V" and rest of letters (possibly by just making all those letters bigger).

Curious, what is the significance of the "v" in "veecade"?

Her is a PNG and A JPEG.
I agree that that the text is a little off center and i believe it can be corrected by altering the "eecade" text. Exactly the kind of comets that i appreciate, thanks. Also any shallower comments would be appreciated too. does it look cool? would it make a cool marquee? am i a complete idiot who has no business designing my own marquee? :dunno

Also doing some basic side art and control panel layout to match. so i hope it doesn't look too crappy.

The reasoning behind the name: I have an old fiend who when when i was growing up had a graphic design company called V Art. It was really cool and i had his stuff in mind when i did this project. The "V" was based off his companies logo. The construct of the cab was based off of Weecade(good plans by the way). The similar style and tribute to my friend plus the tribute to the weecade equals Veecade. Does that make sense? is it a silly name?

To much space between the V and the rest of the word I think.  Side looks nice.

It all looks very cool. Veecade is a cool name, I just figured there was an interesting story behind it... I am sure your friend will enjoy the tribute.

Cool layout and patterns.

Looking at the marquee, I see about 5 colors: Black, white, yellow, light yellow, and pale flesh tone

I'm not sure about the pale flesh tone and the lack of contrast between the last 3 colors.   :dunno

Keep in mind that I'm not a big fan of yellow, so take these observations with the big grain of salt they deserve.

I second the others. You need to narrow the space between “V” and “eecade” since it isn’t obvious now that it is one word.
And you should really consider changing the colors, since the white and yellow really blends and what is a really cool design is lost in a big blur. That would probably be even worse when printed and backlighted.
