Title: NeoGeo Original Buttons & Joystick Question
Post by: Renier on August 09, 2012, 07:58:13 am
Hi guys

Thinking of converting an old Asian cab to NeoGeo MVS (MAME driven) Cab, many limitations with the cab though, but would like the game experience to be very much the same.

My question is, what buttons does (did) NeoGeo/SNK use in their cabs, and where can I get hold of a basic set (to buy)?

I got some new leaf buttons/joysticks lying around, and have clicky long handle oval head joysticks and clicky red buttons on the cab. We're probably talking Sanwa or Seimitchu components (might be wrong)

Help would be appreciated, thanks ; )

They used standard Happ buttons. Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue.

Although they didn't ship with them I always felt the Neo Geo titles played way better with Happ supers.

So in other words, they are all clicky components? How does the Happ Competition Joystick compare to Ultimarc's J Stick? (Sanwa JLW)?

I modded my Happ Supers with the LS-32/zippy switch upgrade kit (http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/en/microswitches/239-seimitsu-ls-32-zippyy-joystick-upgrade-kit.html) and that works well for me.

There's a video at the bottom of the link that demonstrates the difference in clicky-ness on LS-32s and Zippyys.  Happ Supers have similar sound results and a "softer" feel to the throw with these switches installed.

Thanks Scott

I don't like clicky-ness personally, and I'm a bit disappointed to hear that SNK uses clickys for fighter based games (probably just me). I looked under the hood of this cab today and found that it has soft click microswitches on the joysticks and leaf buttons. It was funny because I didn't expect that from the "feel" on the outside. I suppose its like a yellow "potato" - all's much the same.

Beacause I'm exploring with buttons in this project I would like to stick to the SNK original feel though (well as much as possible). My first cab (and the love of my life) uses leaf components and the fighters play smooth on them. I'm going to stick to these joysticks and add Andy's Happ buttons, as I also need to redesign the layout anyways (and I need a JPac =)

Thanks 'all

I really don't find comps too clicky. stock jlws are way clickier.
