Title: Converting MAME from zip to 7z
Post by: krick on July 29, 2012, 11:52:52 am
Now that MAME supports 7z, I was thinking about converting my ROM set from zip to 7z to save some space.

Has anyone here done this?  If so, how, and what compression settings did you use.

I haven't done it yet, but it so happens that I'm planning to do it very soon. I figure I'll unzip everything running 7zip from the command line via an autohotkey script, and then rezip everything in the 7z format the same way. I'd be happy to share my script when I'm done if anyone is interested.

As for compression settings, the 7z format only has one level of compression as far as I know - if you know something I don't, by all means, please share! ;)

The mame devs that added the change said that as it pertains to mame, you'll save a whopping 10 gigs of space.... and that includes a huge set with all the chds ect....
They mainly added 7z support to help with MESS, which does benefit a lot from the added compression.

Unless you are tight for space it probably isn't worth it. Eventually mame sets will be out in the wild already in 7z format... I would just wait until then.
