Title: Is it worth me fixing a busted spinner?
Post by: Drnick on July 24, 2012, 01:35:34 pm
OK I purchased a broken spinner on the basis that I could either

A) Use it with a mouse hack and make my own spinner
b) Find the parts to restore it back to its original glory.

Basically it is a sega spinner (Although that may just be the knob on it :) It is currently missing the optical reader and one of the gears has busted.

I am looking for somewhere that has spare parts for spinners, or should I just head to a model shop and see if I can match up the broken gear to a new one. It may be that it is not worth my time in trying to fix this, but hey you never know.  Anyway below is an image of what it looks like and I have done a bad paint job on showing which gear is broken. If anyone can assist with this I would be most grateful.

If its of any use the gear that is broken is a 2 layered gear, the small gear is 12 spokes and the larger gear should be 60 spokes (It seems that the gear that comes off of the spindle and the broken one are the same size. This will make my life slightly easier should I need to go down the RC/Hobbyshop route.  With regards to the encoder disk this has 24 spokes, I presume you need a specific optic reader for this.

Cool, I thought not, I did have a look around online and 60Tooth 31MM gear was easy to find, but not 60Tooth 36mm. Even if I had found them there would be the question of how to get the old one out without breaking everything.  But at least I got a mounting plate and spinner knob/spindle out of it. I've got plenty of mice kicking about, will look at finding the one with a good resolution, put the encoder directly onto the spindle, bend up some aluminium for the optics and enjoy the alignment game. It won't be perfect but hey it'll do for the money it cost.
