Title: Is now a decent time to be buying terabyte drives?
Post by: Gray_Area on July 20, 2012, 03:13:08 pm
I've been thinking I need at least one of these, and have found some for under a hundred dollars again. Should I do it?

In this hobby?  Yeah you can never get too much hard drive space.  Amazon has several 2TB drives under $120.

I have several (both internal and external) of 1TB or more.  I like keeping backups and I don't feel like pushing it all up to "the cloud".   ;D  I probably go a bit overboard really but if you have like a full mame rom and CHD set and a bunch of other consoles plus artwork and preview movies for your frontend and maybe a nice big mp3 collection and family photos/video...  Yeah even that 2TB can fill up quick.  Once games started using optical media the rom sets started getting huge if you're into that sorta thing.

3Tb Seagate at Costco for $119 right now (it's an external, but you can just rip it out of the enclosure, it's SATA III 7500 rpm).

Nah, dude, a goblin will rape your family at night if you buy one right now.

Is that what I've been seeing at night outside my window!!?

Hmmm. I have no membership there, as I don't buy enough stuff to warrant it. I'm not seeing that on the site, though. 1TB for $219.

The other thing is that I'm still on XP....though am contemplating 7.....too many things relying on each other to get anything done......

i was thinking windows 7 (or xp64) too but the upgrade to windows 8 seems very cheap and it's right around the corner.

i just picked up a 2tb drive for $120, couldn't be happier
