Title: 2 million in Atari Star Wars (with a mouse)
Post by: Gravitar on July 10, 2012, 12:07:56 am
This score is nothing special but it shows the trench run in later levels... I haven't seen such video on Youtube before.

I compensated the increased difficulty between yoke and mouse by adding 3 extra shields after completing the level from the dip switch settings.

I was able to score over 30 million in the arcade machine but I simply can't get same kind of precision from a mouse, no matter how much I play with the MAME analog settings. The towers pose a problem with the mouse (for me), not the trench run which is pretty much always the same combo of levels 8, 9 and 10.

This game is one of my all time favorite arcades.

Use 480pt (HQ resolution). Otherwise the video looks really bad.

Enjoy!

Looks pretty damn good. I very early into MAME found a mouse (not a high-res one, admittedly) so unsatisfactory, and the prospect of trying to learn to use one with high proficiency so unsavory, that I resolved not to play the game until I got a yoke set-up.

Yeah... I've been going back and forth with the yake too.... it'd be awesome but the price is quite greasy.

I don't have a MAME cabinet or anything... I'm not too crazy about them anyway. I'd buy the orginal arcade machines if only they were available where I live (Finland, EU). You Americans are so lucky as these cabinets are still around for you.

Having original BattleZone, Gravitar and Star Wars would be a dream-come-true.

Somewhat, yeah, but it depends on whether you want to maintain them. I'm not a maintainer. Also, I think Battlezone looks great in AAE, and I have no particular attachment to the control panel. Lastly, and most importantly, I wanted to be able to play several games on one machine, hence my Plumcade: yoke Star Wars, Spy Hunter, Outrun, etc ; flight stick and up-down spinner flanking the yoke for Discs of Tron, Zwackery, Zaxxon/Super Zaxxon, and certain laser disc games (MACH 3, Cobra Command, Galaxy Ranger).

Or hack a Dual Strike, as I did - though I also have a dedicated (though I think no longer made) analog controller which I may switch over to. As well, you can use an APAC.

I'm completely hopeless when it comes to any tech/electronics stuff.

They're selling yokes like this, but I doubt these move forwards/backwards at all. Any idea?

Speaking as someone who has to maintain a Space Duel, Tempest, Asteroids Deluxe, Major Havoc, Red Baron, and a Battlezone...

...Gray_Area is speaking truth.  Vector game are not the same to maintain as raster games.  You can't just swap in a monitor when necessary.

Anyone has a spare MAME-compatible Star Wars yoke for sale?

...for a reasonable price?

Your best bet is to hit this website make an account and search for one in the forums thats what i did and found an awsome fire fox yoke  or a turbo sub  which is not nearly as abused as a star wars yoke! Didnt have to rebuild it at all perfect condition for $150
