Title: TED (spoiler alert)
Post by: danny_galaga on July 03, 2012, 01:14:18 am
What can I say? Was awesome! Two things made it not a 5 from me. At one time in the movie, it started to drag a little, and I was thinking that must be the end of the good stuff. Almost as soon as I started thinking that, it picked up again. The other thing (a minor point for most) is that at one stage Marky Marks girlfriend tells him he's always going to be stuck in a $38,000 a year job. Why is this a bad thing? I get really peeved when the character is told something like that, because most of us watching the movie are in that situation. Hollywood folk forget that not everyone is amazing like them and can have an incredible career making squillions of bucks. Anyway, just explaining that point makes it seem more than it is, in terms of enjoying the movie.

I actually think Marky Mark is getting better at acting. That chick was good too, and Seth Mcfarlane is excellent as TED. Does he do voice acting in his show, Family Guy? Not into that show, so wasn't sure I'd enjoy this. But obviously I did! Patrick Stewart did a splendid job narrating. Some excellent cameos too. I won't mention who if you don't know. I would consider that a spoiler...

4.5/5

Oh, and Giovanni Ribesi really taps into the creepiness of his 'religion' (Scientology). Brilliant stuff!

Quote

5/5 - The Way Back, The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

Does he do voice acting in his show, Family Guy?

Yes. As a matter of fact, TED is very much similar in voice to FG's Peter Griffin even though Seth's normal speaking voice is closer to Brian (the dog on FG).

Thanks for the review!

That's encouraging. I think Family Guy is one of the least funny comedies I've ever seen, bested only perhaps by Big Bang Theory, so I figured this movie would be terrible despite its amusing premise.

+1

Both are amazingly formulaic and predictable.

I was thinking this would be, too. Didn't we already get this with Alf, and that little robot movie (I can't remember the name) ?

I just think that TED is one of the few places where you will be able to get to what is going to be the standard in the next few years or so.

But there are still visions that have not been translated into something concrete, the ones that have already made their way surely are taking advantage of the buzz that they have gathered from the usual people.  Really interesting.

About 1/3 of Family Guy was hilarious before it got cancelled, IMO.  Never should have been brought back... always better to leave too early than to wish it was gone yesterday.

Agreed. Though it seems in recent episodes there are still maybe one or two genuine laugh-out-loud jokes, the rest of it is so uneven (at best) that FG may be the only program that's better as a clip show.

Saw it tonight - hilarious

Did you like the various cameos? I thought it was a good balance, and they all fitted it nicely (",)

As much as I hate Seth McFarlane, I just watched the trailer for this and it actually looks okay. I'll watch it when it hits home video.

I really liked it, my GF thought it was just "okay". The Ryan Reynolds Cameo did make me laugh though because....
he didn't have a single word of dialog.

I honestly would consider his name a spoiler. And yes, he was brilliant (",)

also on IMDB is the whole plot summary. Why would I go to IMDB if I didn't want to know details about the movie before I see it?

How is his cameo a spoiler?  I just knew it was that douchesack from Drive.

:duckhunt

That's funny because that's who I kept thinking of when I was discussing the movie with a work colleague, who also couldn't remember his name...

They're really not interchangeable. Gosling has done a ton of varied, interesting, excellent work. Reynolds hasn't, and also there's something annoying about him that I can never put my finger on . . . Like he was raised ultra-privileged and considers everyone else beneath him for it. I have no idea . . . He may have been raised in a trailer park for all I know, but it's the vibe I get.
