Title: Vacation in Boston...where to go...
Post by: emb on June 20, 2012, 08:21:26 pm
My wife is going to a convention for work in Boston. I decided, heck, I've always wanted to visit Boston, maybe I'll take a couple vacation days and travel a little around the east coast.

I was thinking on hitting up a few historical sites, a few old bars, eat some delicious food, and of course, visit an arcade or two, especially since I live in Fargo, North Dakota (great town although there is a severe lack of arcades). Maybe I'll travel up north...I hear there's a Fun Spot up there ;)

With that, do you know of any worthwhile places to visit?

If you are looking for an old bar

If you like live music check to see if any bands you like are playing here

If the Red Sox are NOT playing this is a cool spot and the whole Landsdowne area is very touristy.

Be a real tourist

Pinball Wizard (http://www.pinballwizardarcade.com)

It's a must go.

Two really good spots are the Boston Aquarium and Fanueil Hall.  They can both be done in the same day walking.

I would absolutely suggest a Duck Tour.   My sister is a con"duck"tor.   Go to the south Boston waterfront.   Good bars and restaurants.   The Harpoon brewery is there.  Not sure how long you are coming for or whether you plan to leave the city.   Being from North Dakota I would think you would like to get to the salt water at least once.   Many beach options.

It's only about a 2 hour drive to the largest arcade in the world, Funspot.

History:

The Freedom Trail (http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/)
Takes you past all the historic sites.

The U.S.S. Constitution (http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/ussconstitution.asp)
Leave pocket knives, etc at the hotel, Coast Guard still acts like terrorists want to destroy this boat.

Faneuil Hall (http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/faneuilhall.asp)
Kinda neat, but filled with tourists.

Food

The Warren Tavern (Charlestown) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Tavern)
Oldest Pub, Paul Revere and pals drank here.

North End (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60745-d103113-Reviews-North_End-Boston_Massachusetts.html)
You cannot go wrong eating here. Just don't call it "Little Italy".

Mike's Pastry (http://www.mikespastry.com/) (in the North End)
Warning: You'll never enjoy another cannoli after Mike's.

And don't let PBJ fool you. We're not all as anti-social and filled with OCD as he is. The guy makes me look positively sprightly.

Seconded on Mike's Pastry...just amazing...every time I head to Boston for a Celtics game (usually 2 a season) I hit Mike's Pastry the morning after and load up on stuff.

Also, http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/ (http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/) is very cool, in my opinion as a dipstick tourist, and I don't even like oysters.  Just hang out at the bar and talk to people.  Never met someone at the bar that wasn't willing to have a conversation about...well...anything.

Don't expect to park anywhere.  Just eat it and park in the paid lots.  That's all you can do unless you really know your way around.  Boston is an awful, awful, awful city to park in.

Go to Cask N' Flagon in Fenway! It's right near the stadium and super local. Boston Beerworks is a nice spot but very touristy at times (there is one right next to Cask). Boston museums (http://www.massvacation.com/greaterBoston/arts.php) are pretty decent as well - I actually love The Children's Museum and feel like it has a lot to offer for adults. The Museum of Fine Arts is nice if you are into art. Sunset Grille is a good place for beer but I find that they are typically out of what I want to drink, and the service isn't all that great. Check out the Harpoon Brewery, they have free tastings at certain times during the week.
