I have a new Makvision monitor that I just now have connected for the first time and powered up. It powers on fine, but when the computer it is attached to starts to boot it will lock up before it even gets to the Windows boot screen. I have tried multiple monitor cables with the same affect. So I switched to a laptop and plugged in the monitor but the laptop does not send a signal to it either.
Im pretty sure I have a bunk monitor, but is there anything else I can do to test or troubleshoot?

Aside from bad EDID data (which actually implies bad drivers, not bad hardware - the drivers need to handle this), there's really no way the monitor can "lock up" the computer.
Have you verified that the computer is actually locked up, or is the monitor just not displaying the signal? Depending on which Makvision you have, be aware that it may only handle up to 640x480, while Windows defaults to 800x600, so the monitor will shut itself down to protect itself (the fancy digital ones give a "No Signal" message). Even the high res Makvision only goes up to 800x600, and Vista/7, default to 1024x768.

aside from the fact your request for help lack's a bit of needed info
ie lappie type/ putter's os's
most lappie's will drive 15 pin
monitior's
if u are in doubt about the res,try running 15khz s/w
on your lappie to see if it will latch up the monitor input
as pointed out do u get the no singal flag ?
ie that is what it will say on screen
if not and the monitor light stay's green :normal-on-color:
then u may not be giving it what it want's for sync etc
ie 15khz found here on this board is a good test and start

Yes in order to help, we need to know the model number as well if it is a digital (hi res) or a tri-res which is anolog.? As well as the system you are using as some times the PC will attempt to comunicate with the monitor to determine the resolution, if it is a tri-res it may not (probably will not find it) Then it will try to boot up in a probably higher resolution that the monitor will accept.
If you have another display such as an LCD go to screen properties and see what it is set to.
You may need to use advanced poperties, display all resollutions and the fotce it to 640X480 res (again depends on the monitor)
Just curious what does Makvision recommend??

The monitor in question is a Makvision M2929D TriSync monitor capable of 800x600. Here is a link to it ...

I spoke with Betson yesterday and the guy that services the monitors over there had me start with the cable that runs from the logic board next to the monitor plug that runs to the smaller board at the back of the monitor. He said that usually when you have a lack of signal it is either an issue with that cable or with the connector that the monitor cable is actually attached to coming loose. I was able to get the one from the bottom board off, but the one on the back board is a little harder to get out while in the cabinet. I am going to try again to get that one off here in a little bit, if not, then I will need to pull the monitor out of the cabinet to give me more room to work.
The computers I am hooking up are standard PC's and a Dell laptop.
Just to make sure, once I discharge the monitor, I am ok touching everywhere back there right? :-)

there is 4 seperate post's on the problem u are having
just go to our monitior fourm's u will c them
i will get the schematic unless rick has 1 ?
which would help me understand why u are removing cable's etc
i would like u to leave it as is :ie back toghter:,and do a few more test;s for use..

They said that cable needed to be reseated first. This is the cable that sits right next to the serial connector that the actual monitor cable hooks in to. It apparently takes the signal from that serial connector and runs it to the back of the tube. It was hot glued in, so I am surprised it would need reseating, but Im giving it a chance anyway.

the db15 is on a sub board no ?

It is on the bigger of the two boards

The db15 is at the bottom of the circle, and the cable I have reseated at the topmost inside of the circle.
And where it attaches to the second board

ya i c that
the dbplug is on the main chassic
and rgb route right too the neck board
horz-vert-sync's route to there respective circuit's
for processing.
let me ask u a q
when u power it up
dose the neck glow orange ?
right after the neck board,about a 1/4" up from the crt socket ?

well as a rule trisync are internal self sync
until fed a ttl level,then they sync to it
i would think a bum monitor
real acid test is to feed the singal going into the monitor in q to a lcd
if u get a pic then u perty much have your answer
