Post by: crumptinite on June 01, 2012, 07:38:18 am
Going for a taito with a few changes. Started a while back will post progress.

This will not be a dedicated cabinet. There will be a drawer in which i put a laptop in and plug everything up to whenever I want to play.

Materials:
2x of 16mm 4x8 MDF
4 caster wheels
2x 2x4
1 can primer oil based
1 can black paint (oil based)
2x HAPP Comp.
Lots of buttons

String Method Not perfect but it worked well enough

Both sides cut a little water damage from the ride home but its the bottom so no biggy.

So I've hit a wall pretty early. The problem is MDF splitting. I made little strips of extra MDF to connect the cabinet together. I even drill a small hole first but the woo keeps splitting. Any advice.

MDF should not be screwed into from the ends.  It just always splits or mushrooms because the material is so dense.  I would get some softwood and use that to make batons.  This is a much better method for assembling an MDF cabinet.  Personally, I really hate MDF but it seems to be what everyone around here uses.  Good luck!

thanks for the responses but I think I got the fix. Wood glue!! So I glued and let settle it's holding like a champ. I think i'll throw some different material connectors ( prolly cutup 2x4) in when I attatch the back, cp, and monitor mount. Will post picks when I get back.

Anyone got any advice on attaching the marquee?

Here's a recent thread with a number of options to consider.

So those are pretty much retainers that i screw into the cabinet? Do they have enough room for plexi?

Yes, the retainers screw into the cabinet.

Do they have enough room? -- Which retainer and what thickness plexi?   :dunno

So I started on the cp and marquee. Any comments on the WIP? Blue lines are just my guide lines.

Sanded two 1 more coat

Sanded again and last coat. A few imperfection but hopefully 1500 grain paper and lacquer will fix it. (http://img.tapatalk.com/a69378a0-6b58-0561.jpg)

Letting that paint dry, started wiring the cp.

I love the classic Taito shape. Looks like its coming together nicely. I'm curious though....so the only thing holding your cab together is wood glue? I mean it looks like you didn't use any batons at all. I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.

Didn't make an up date of that change. There are small screws that were drilled into the ends of the MDF. The wood glue alone was  not strong enough. didnt use batons because it wasn't necessary. I'm going to redo the thread with more details when it's done.

I'd re-enforce with some L brackets and the like.   love the shape, very Taito-ish

are the green buttons for coin up? I know it sounds silly, but I'd keep them uniform, like green to the left and start to the right for both P1 and P2, its an aesthetics thing, symmetry doesnt always look better. Id go all red buttons for the players too, break up all that black and white a little and play off the color of the dynamite sticks.

Buttons are only temporary for wiring so dont mind the colors. Gonna be white on one side and black on the other. Each with a single red button. Itll make sense when i finally post my control panel artwork. As of right now there is no art on it but ot will all come together

As for l brackets... I kinda stayed away because i just never do projects with them. Its pretty solid... Even attempted to pull it apart... I sat on the inside of the cabinet with not so much as a creek coming from it

your call, I'd rather drop $8 for peace of mind :)

I was thinking, since you havent finalized art and what not, you could mismatch the buttons, white buttons with black rings on a white background on one side, black buttons with white rings on a black background on the other side, just looks good in my head.
