Title: It's been a long time.... (Best cocktail frontend?)
Post by: Spartan on October 02, 2003, 02:45:47 pm
It's been a long time since I've visited these boards, but I'm going to be rebuilding the computer in my cocktail cabinet, and was wondering what front-end people are using these days.

I had been using ArcadeOS+DOS, but have since upgraded my computer from a P233MMX to an Athlon XP 1700, so I have plenty of horsepower for windows now.

There hasn't been any real change.  3darcade and emutron will support screen rotation.  The rest need hardware rotation via the video card, at least as far as windows front ends go.  The good news is most of your radeons and geforce cards now support hardware rotation, so if you haven't bought your card yet then your choices are limitless.

Thanks for the reply, Howard.

I hadn't planned on making a video card change since my Trident Blade 3d PCI card works well with my fixed frequency monitor and AdvanceMAME.

Speaking of rotation, one of my favorite features of ArcadeOS was how the screen would flip based on which user was scrolling thru the menu.

An atholon 1700 xp with a crappy ole trident card seems like a waste to me.  You might want to think about upgrading to andy's arcade vga.  Not sure if it supports rotation though.  I think it does.

It could be a waste, but it's only for a cocktail to play the vertical classics.  As for the ArcadeVGA, I assumed that was for CGA 15kHz arcade monitors -- not for fixed frequency computer monitors.  I'll have to take another look at it.  It should support rotation via the driver since it is Radeon based.

Well if its only for the classics there was no reason to upgrade from the P2-233 was there? I would agree with HC go for a ArcadeVga if your cocktail uses a arcademonitor if not go for a normal Radeon.

True, but I got a good deal from a private seller for a AMD 1.4GHz TBird, 256 PC133, and a decent motherboard -- I had to jump on it.  Besides, now I have Windows XP on the box, plus a wireless PCI card for remote administration, etc.

And that's exactly my point.  Xp supports 2d hardware acceleration right on the desktop, so you fe choice will be "snappier" if you upgrade the vid card.  You don't need a brand new 9600 btw, anything 7500 or higher will do and you can get them for a song.
