Title: Is it worth getting Wii for emulation?
Post by: maiki on May 24, 2012, 11:40:19 am
Since emulators on Xbox cannot output true low resolution 15 kHz video (240p) and PS2 is too weak to handle anything at full speed, I am more and more inclined to getting Nintendo Wii just to run old school games. I am not interested in 3D stuff, just good old video games starting with Atari 2600 ending with Neo Geo, CPS-2.

Are there any people who use Wii and run the emulators on CRT TV or arcade monitor?

1. How well is the video output at 15 kHz generally? Is it close or identical to the original hardware? I plan to get a SCART RGB if I go for the Wii. That leads me to question: how about specific modes like Moon Patrol which runs at 55 (?) Hz?
2. I am specifically interested in ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 emulation. How good are the emulators for these systems? I did a quick search and it seems that ZX Spectrum should be OK but the C-64 is based on some old Frodo emulator and its video output is at least very weird with side borders missing!
3. How about wireless controllers? Is there any lag compared to wired controllers on Xbox/PS2? How comfortable is the wiimote? Can it be used with that nuntchuk to play 2 joystick games like Robotron?
4. I am a 15 kHz pixel purist. All I will accept it the perfect 15 kHz RGB video on a CRT screen, identical to the ouput of the original board. Let's say,Advance MAME is the norm for me. Does Nintendo Wii have any chance?

Thanks.

Will this be in an arcade or just being played on a CRT TV? I say this only because your talking about using the wiimote and nun-chuck. Do you plan on hacking the controllers to be able to utilize the joysicks?

My friend and I play MK2 and SSFT all the time on the SNES EMU with the Classic controllers and we don't notice any lagging.

And I am not 100% on robotron's controls.

Ive always wanted to try my WII in my arcade. I have a x-arcade tankstick with the 5-in adapter that will hook up a WII or game cube to my CP. I'm actually going to download somethings and hook it up today to check it out.

Thanks for your reply. It will be purely CRT TV thing. And yes, I am very interested how Robotron games can be controlled. I am now thiunking about going to shops tomorrow for that Mario Kart black bundle. But I have to think again...

Any more info on 240p support - how common is it...?

Are you familiar with the hackings to get the emulations going?

Not really. I have found some information over here:

That should work for all Wiis shouldn't it?

That info looks right. I used the Indiana Pwns one. The hardest part was getting the right Lego Indiana Jones disk. It needs to be the original one. I think the first disk I got was a combo 1 and 2 pack (didn't work).

And make sure your using a regular SD card not SDHC.

I love my Wii for NES/Snes Emulation, haven't tried Mame or NeoGeo.

wiibrew.org would have all the info you need.

Why not a SDHC card? I have to buy one anyway, but I think it is wiser to have more than 2 GBs. I want to buy SDHC for sure!

I have just found that the situation is not that good on the Wii. For example the C-64 emulator (and probably ZX Spectrum ones as well) is using SDL libraries and there is no 240/288p output! So it seems that there are systems that work (NES, Genesis) but there are systems that are more or less usells (C-64, A800). So I have to say no to Wii for the time being.

As for the Xbox 1. Fail. Sorry but as I stated in the first post, there is no 240p/288p output on Xbox emulators. Blame Microsoft for that, since they did not include these modes in XDK. All emulators were written with that XDK. If you don't mind staring at flickering 480i/576i blurred screen... I do!

Remeber I am not using LCD or plazma screen. I want the real authentic look. The only way is to run it on CRT at 15 kHz at 240p/288p and similar. No console can do this properly for emulation purposes right now. Back to messing with the PC.

PC is defiantly the way to go with emulations.

Here you go, The Indiana Pwns hack is quite old now :) (Obviously not as old as the Zelda hack though).

You should be able to use bannerbomb or letterbomb
