Just reviewed Twin Cobra 2 as the GOTD on my blog. It's one of those games that the faster you tap the fire button, the more powerful your fire becomes. If you slow or stop, your fire reverts back to minimum. Love these games - build up my biceps and give me carpal tunnel.
So, I was wondering, what other shmups have this function / work this way?

It's not exactly what you are describing but in Ibara you can tap the fire button as fast as you can. The fastest frequency you can achieve then becomes your autofire rate when you hold the fire button down.

Actually, I realized Ninja Commando is a game that has this feature. It's not really a shmup, more of what I call an "Omni shooter" (field shooter like Caliber 50). But again, the faster you shoot, the more powerful your weapon becomes. Sweet.

Nice, didnt know such a thing existed on certain games.
FYI, Leaf switches are best for heavy rapidfire games. You barely press them, bouncing gently like a springboard (dont have to bottom out the switch). They are far less fatiguing than microswitches.

Blazing Star
I know there are others, but I'm having a total brainfart today.

Baryon Future Assault you activate the 'laser' by tapping quickly.. too quickly actually, I guess it's designed to stop you using it all the time

Raiden II and DX, both have the purple "toothpaste" laser that builds up from shots to a lock-on stream.
Unfortunately neither games are properly emulated in mame.
Though you could run the PSX port in a playstation emulator. Next best thing to getting the PCBs.

afaik that's just a standard powerup mechanic (collect powerups = bigger laser)
I believe he's asking about games where you get a distinctly different shot by rapidly tapping the button rather than holding it down / tapping it slowly.
Plenty of games have auto fire, but give you a faster rate of fire if you can tap faster, very few actually change the shot types. I know there's another one with a power bar visible on the screen which increases the faster you tap, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called.

That's exactly what I'm talking about and, in fact, I know what you are referring to with a power bar increasing as you tap faster but I can't think of the damn game either!
