Title: Cocktail Mode for NES/SNES
Post by: mavsprophecy on May 13, 2012, 12:19:11 am
Hey, I am in the process of planning out a cocktail build.  Love the "Cocktail Mode" on Mame that splits horizontal games and mirrors the screen for each player, but can't find that option on any NES or SNES emulator.

I tried the latest version of MESS that I could find, but it didn't appear to have the option either.  I don't really want to change my video settings to always display like that (if that even is an option).

Does anyone use any emulator besides Mame on their Cocktails?  What solution have you found?

Bump...

So of all the people with cocktail cabs, no one has figured this out?

I'm not aware of any consoles that supported cocktail mode.  There would be no way for the emulator to know 'when' to flip the screen -- the game/system would have had to support it before MESS could emulate it.

Yes I am talking about the horizontal images (as most NES/SNES games were horizontal).

It would be fall down the feature list of some of those emulator makers, I admit.  Just wondering if anyone had figured it out.  I am excited about making a cocktail machine, and some of those Nintendo games would be fantastic with a friend across the table from me.  Luckily some of the best games have better versions on Mame (like TMNT2, NBA Jam, Street Fighter 2, etc.), so those will be fun and easy with the Mame Cocktail mode.

Anything emulated in MAME or MESS can be used through the "fake" cocktail video option.  Not a true cocktail mode, but gives sides a view of the action in which the 2nd player could use if using a cocktail fixed monitor.  You can trigger this with -view cocktail via command-line or change it in the TAB menu under Video Options.

Thanks Tafoid!

I see the option for MAME but not for MESS. That's the problem.  Can you see it on your setup?

It's available to anyone who can access the TAB menu in either MAME or MESS.  What version or flavor of MESS are you using .. command-line binary or MESSUI?  It's not a UI option directly, but an option inside of MESS while running the emulation when you bring up the "TAB" menu.  This can be achieved at any time while emulation is running (if not working, hit scroll lock which switches to natural keyboard and not the emulated one - then TAB).  There should be no differences between MAME and MESS concerning these core functions.  Unless you are using a very very old version of MESS?  :)

Thanks again!

I just checked and while I had downloaded the newest MESS, I installed it in an old folder which had not overrode the original one.  Now I have the real version and it is working!

As much as MESS can I suppose... got a lot of work ahead of me on it.
