Title: LED newbie question....
Post by: gonzojoey on May 12, 2012, 12:33:35 am
I haven't really worked with LED's yet, so I have a simple question that I'm hoping someone can help me with...
I have an older "Poker" style arcade machine that has lighted buttons, but they currently have #161 miniature bulbs with the wedge base in them. I'd like to install an LED-Wiz from GGG to control the lights, but Randy over at GGG suggested that I replace the bulbs w/ LEDs (which I agree would be best), but I'm not 100% sure what to replace them with. Is this what I'm looking for?: http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fmini-wedge.html (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fmini-wedge.html)
But they have "Polarized" and "Non-Polarized" versions and some are "SMD" and others not. I'm not looking for color changing or anything fancy, just something that will light the buttons using the current housings I have and that is compatible w/ the LED-Wiz. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

The Superbrights are 12v, LEDwiz is 5v, non-polorized means you don't have to worry which way you put the bulb in the socket, it will work either way.

"SMD" = Surface Mount Device (no holes/leads going through the board)

#161 and #555 bulbs use the same base, but the #555s are 6.3V instead of 14V.

These three might give you a good starting point:

The LED-Wiz will work with 12v LEDs as well, if configured properly.   Polarized or non-polarized isn't a big deal.  If it doesn't work in one orientation, just flip it around.  No damage will result if it goes in backwards, it just won't work that way.
