Title: Scramble: the impossible tunnel
Post by: Gray_Area on May 08, 2012, 12:59:00 am
I played the arcade version a handful of times as a kid. On the Vectrex, I could play it indefinitely. Since playing it in MAME, I haven't for the life of me passed the tunnel section. I can get all the way there on one ship - I did just now - but no matter what stick I use, I alwasy bite it at that tight jagged spot. Either I try to just move up, wherein I crash into the wall ahead - or, most often, I try to do like I did on the Vectrex and go fast then slow and pull up. INVARIABLY I smash into the ceiling. If not for that part, who knows how long I could play it...

Just tap the stick when in tight spots....too much movement sends you into a wall. Super Cobra is even worse with more tight spots that are harder to get thru.

So you are saying that you have poor coordination/timing?  ;D

It seems like the game has a hair lag in stopping movement in the tunnel.

However, I do tend to want to 'fly' rather than 'waddle' in scrollers, whereas the latter may be necessary (as boardjunkie inferred).

It follows the same rule you'd use in a bullet hell game....you have a very small path to get thru. So small precise movements are the only way to get it done.

I cleared this on Skramble on the C-64. Never did clear the Arcade Version  :banghead:

(The combination of the Vectrex port and controller meant you could actually fly the whole way...but, anyways...) I haven't tried yet.

Here you go, direct from my copy of the 1981 book "Secrets of the Video Game Super Stars":

Look at the direction you need to travel.

That's not the hard one, but the one 'up' after that.

Or maybe there is a noclip code? Try "idspispopd."

What?  Anyways, yeah I could fly just like that on the Vectrex.

Showing my age I guess... Doom reference, that code let you go through walls ("no clipping mode").

Ohhh. I thought it was something like that, but couldn't hope to guess.

So I tried again, but I couldn't even get to that point. It seems A LOT squirlier in current MAME.
