Hey guys,
I'm getting ready to begin a mini-mame project (to sit on a table) and was planning on using a computer monitor. Because they are so chunky, I am considering a flat panel monitor (up to 5 inches deep). I am also thinking this would enable me to either a) make the cabinet less deep, or b) save space inside the cabinet so that I may mount my shuttle mini-computer behind it. Does anyone have any opinions on a flat panel monitor? Will the quality be the same as a regular monitor? Are there heating issues? Are there heating issues if the mini-computer sits behind it? I would most liklely not have a back to the cabinet.
I'm not a monitor expert and was wondering why, with the advent of flatter monitors, people who use computer monitors don't use them more often (space saver, etc). I never really see them mentioned on BYOAC. Is it a price thing or is the quality too good?
If a flat panel computer monitor is just as good as a regular monitor, what would be the best bet (either a 15" or 17" monitor)? I am looking at playing games such as SFII, MK2, NBA Jam, Metal Slug, Sunset Riders, Puzzle Bobble, Raiden Fighters.
Any help would be appreciated because I want to start thi sproject ASAP.

Main issue with a flat panel is time it takes to turn pixels on and off. They're getting faster, but they still suffer ghost trails when graphics move quickly across the screen. Another issue is their limited support of graphics modes, you might run into issues where games have to be run in a window.
If you can, I'd suggest trying the games on the monitor before you buy it, or at least buy it where you can return it without a major hassle if you aren't happy with it.
