Title: Can anyone id this joystick?
Post by: creatine28 on May 03, 2012, 03:28:50 pm
Got this joystick a few years back in a joystick lot I got off of Ebay, and haven't been able to figure what kind it is, or what game or machine it might have been used in.

Anyone know?

It is a Chinese knockoff of a WICO 4-way.

That is a cheap Chinese knock-off of  a 4-way Wico stick.  A poor quality product compared to what it is trying to replicate.

That looks like it was modeled after a Stern Balltop.  Is it plastic or metal housing?  Just wondering.  I thought it was a Stern.

Its all plastic.   Also the stick is very short, too short to use.  Also, it appears to have a 4 way hole or so it looks like cut out. However, the stick is so small that it really wouldn't work as a 4 ways stick.   Also, the grommet almost looks like a grommet from an old school pacman stick.   Really strange.    I wondering if it would of been used on a crazy climber cab, since the stick is so short and really would work better if you used the palm of your hand to move it.

Stern made really short sticks.  They also had longer shaft version.  The short one was like really short.  I took this pic from Mike's Arcade:

Midway had their own thing goin' on as far as joysticks go. They never used the Wico style...they had those big metal ones made for them by someone.....perhaps an early Happ product. Exidy used the same assembly on a couple games as well so it wasn't something Midway made in house.

Those Wico knockoffs with short sticks are normally found in cocktail games. They used those so the ball top wouldn't be too close to the glass. They were pretty common in the amusement supply catalogs (other than Wico, although they did make a short version for CT use).
