Title: Really cool cabinet accessory - UK version available?
Post by: kujina on September 30, 2003, 10:31:48 pm
Take a look at this review of a special special power strip http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/smartstrip1.html (http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/smartstrip1.html) is there anything like this available to the UK? This would be really cconvenient for a cabinet.

Maplins has this :

http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=031001121811996&moduleno=36639&Products=1

If that doesnt work, do a product search for L01AQ

Ive not tried it myself, but noticed it when searching the other day.

Yes, that one should do the trick, they don't seem to be selling them yet tho - I will probably get one when they do...

There was a followup to that review that said "it wasn't all that" since things plugged into the strip had to take more or less power than the item that was the "key" starter.... Like if the computer was set to start the strip, but the marquee light was on that same strip, it wouldn't work because the difference in power consumption, or some kind of take on that...

Okay okay, I can't remember exactly, but just do a bit more research before settling on one of those...maybe I just imagined reading the negatives?? :)

The company that makes the SmartStrip have got a newer version which fixes all those problems.
As for the UK maplin one I'm taking it at face value and will asume it does what it says it does.

I just got my Bits LTD Smartstrip and am really satisfied with it.  I apparently got a "free upgrade" to the LGC3 version... whatever that is compared to what I ordered (web site wasn't very clear on that)

It works exactly like I expected/as advertised and it's *very* nice having a 1 button on / auto-shut off of my whole cab (TV/Marquee lite/computer) - I give it an A+!

Still don't get why people don't just use a 2-pole 5 volt relay.  plugs in with quick disconnects and everything, and some can handle more amps than the smart strip too.  Plug PC power supply 5v pins to the coil, and the live and neutral to the switch contacts, done.
