Title: Is a Tri Sync Monitor really necessary for Mame?
Post by: lettuce on April 24, 2012, 10:22:57 am
Is a Tri Sync monitor really needed for Mame and retro consoles? As from say NES up to PS2 consoles all games were 15kHz and a few 24khz based. There isn't a great deal of Mame roms that are 31khz is there?, I can understand the need for 31khz monitor if you would be playing vertical games that have been rotated by software for a horizontal display, but other than that wouldn't a single or dual (15/24khz) sync monitor be the best bet?

There were plenty of games from the later 90s till a few years ago that were VGA or SVGA or XGA.

The only benefit I find in an analog multisync is that you can set up your stuff on it, then switch it down for your front end/games.

Is there a list/database anywhere that has these 31khz (VGA/SVGA) games??

Basically all that naomi stuff.
But you can use 640x480 in 15khz too (altough interlaced).
So there is basicaly no reason for a tri-sync if you have 15/25kHz.

tri-sync is only a requirement if you absolutely can't stand interlaced and want to use noswitchres in mame

but, trust me, at one point you will want to have real arcade hardware in your cab and that tri-sync monitor will really come in handy.

Whilst i can understand people going down this route of having a real arcade PCB game and all, the aracde games that really get my heart pumping are mid 80's-90's games and to be honest the Naomi type games that would require VGA resolutions i only ever played them on my Dreamcast on standard Scart TV so they would have all been interlaced anyway, and thats how i remember them and so i guess thats how i would want to play them now a days, so i think a 15khz monitor would be the best option for myself. Plus have you seen the prices of arcade PCB now a day!?, for a game like GnG your looking at £80+ and thats only for one game, considering i can just load up MAME and play an identical version just completely makes purchasing PCB totally out of the question for me :(. 15khz games look better on a dedicated 15khz monitor than on a tri sync also
