Title: Best 19" option for mame
Post by: jilted on April 20, 2012, 10:55:33 pm
Hello,

It's been a while since I've been on.  I am about to start working on my mame cabinet.  What's the best option for a 19" these days that will support all the resolutions needed by mame?  Actually I will be running hyperspin with every emulation I can throw at it! :-)

Seems like all I can find so far are LCD and not CRT.

The reason I say 19" is because I have found another Defender cabinet, completely empty, no boards, no wires, no cabinet art, etc.  I really don't have the space for a huge machine with a 27" screen.

I guess the other consideration since there us a bezel used in the defender cab with a 19", how much bigger can you go in that cabinet without much trouble?

EDIT:
I guess part of my concern is how many resolutions do I "really" need to support?  Also, it seems like most 19" CRTs only support CGA.

Thanks,
-stephen

Yes, finding a "new" 19" CRT based monitor may be very difficult to impossible! The production of these tubes was discontinued a number of years ago. There may still be some floating around as there are various companies that but "last production" runs, but the next issue will be getting the electronics to match. Hate to say but an LCD may be the best route. Having said that you need to consider the following:
- Most important will accept all the resolutions you need without the use of an upscaler. An upscaler adds 1 more stage of signal conversion, 1 more stage of degradation and may not accept all of the resolutions.
- Is it 4:3 or 16X9 aspect ration (Wide screen), BTW nothing wrong with wide screen, if you have the right LCD oother that not what you are used to viewing!
- Speaking of viewing, brightness, contrast and viewing angle.... very very important.
- Response time, means the ability of he LCD to espond to rapidly chanhing videk content, if the response time is too long the video/game will appera "Blurred and streaky"
- Ability to adjsut bothe size and position, many LCD's do not have that
- Mounting of the LCD.

That is why our LCD's have taken all of these things into consideration;
High brightness, contrast, viewing angles, open fram construction, programmed to receive all the resolutions.
In any case good luck with your endeavors.
Rick

Thanks for the input!  I am going to try and pick up the cabinets in the next week or so.
