Title: Are these xxxx in 1 boards legitimate?
Post by: xmrkite on April 18, 2012, 07:15:37 pm
Hello, I have seen a few sellers online selling 1000 in 1, 2060 in one, and what not boards. They seem to be computers that run mame. Are these legitimate systems? Do they license these games?

-Thanks

Not licensed, not legit.  It's a board with mame and moody roms.  They are all over the place, some are pretty nice, most are crap.  This forum does not smile upon the posting of links to these boards in efforts to keep more discussions of copyright and new avatars of certain banned users from cropping up.  Both are tiresome and have been sufficiently had.

Whatchya building?

I am pretty sure those aren't legit either.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but Neo Geo didn't make multi game carts, instead they made multicart capable system, like the 4 slot.  So any cart with multiple games is bogus.

How can these companies sell these if they are not legit? I've seen tons of 60 in 1 arcades with pacman, donkey kong, etc for sale.

Some of licensing companies are bankrupt but their copyright is still in effect, so there is no owning company to complain.  Some are just doing other things and don't want to spend the money to pursue what they see as an annoying niche market.  Some are actively protecting their work but it's a big ass market and the vendors are out of jurisdiction.  China, for example, doesn't exactly do a lot of copyright enforcement.  You can note where a lot of these come from.  Trying to stop every moody peice of code being sold on the web, or even amazon for that matter, is like trying to stop the wind with your fingers.

the multi neogeo carts arent legit either. SNK didnt make any X in 1 Carts (not even 2 in 1), but they did make up to 6 slot motherboards (as LeChuck said) Closest thing you'll get to a mass produced X in 1 game is the namco collections, they had a few 5 or 6 in ones, and the other "reunion" games

What they said.

The 60-in-1 is MAME on a chip.

Who cares?  Buy them anyway.

Exactly, they are legitimately real.
I had a 60in1 and it was awesome. Never had a problem with it crapping out and I got to experience great arcade games without paying tons of money.

LeChuck:  what is a moody rom/code?  not familiar with that term.

I'm about ready to say they're tacitly legit, since they are so widely available and openly sold.  Obviously it's a bone the mamedev's but I don't think they would have not done their huge project knowing that some icade people would monetize it in a small way.  As for the roms, abandonedware in fact though not legally.

The fact that I apparently just bought one has *no* bearing on my opinion.

Moody as in from a dubious source presented without notification of questionable legality.

A while back we ordered a "signing time" DVD set off Amazon for our children, found out a year later that it was a very well done bootleg set and the signing time copyright holder had just found out it was going on under their nose.  This is a moody set that was by purchased under the assumption of being legit.

I try to separate my personal opinion on usage from the facts surrounding the item.  The question asked if they were legit, as in licensed by the copyright owner, and my response is they are not.  If the OP had asked what is the moral or ethical implication of using them anyway I would have kept my mouth shut since that's between him and his pocketbook.  The fact that the SNK XXX in one isn't made by SNK is just that - a fact, not a value judgement.

Tacit legality is a separate matter of personal opinion and ethics and I try to not judge others' application of their pocketbook thereof.

Who cares?

The OP does or he wouldn't have made the thread.

LeChuck's retort was dead on balls, I can only hope to one day be as eloquent.

FWIW, I love my 48-in-1 and 60-in-1 cabs ... some of the sound/emulation is off, but they still see tons of play.

I've been looking for a reasonably-priced horizontal multiboard and was liking the looks (and price) of the new 128-in-1, but it looks like that is a piece of garbage.

One thing to be legitimately concerned about is that there is a ton of variation in quality amongst the multiboards.

Some are absolutely crap (e.g. NOT awesome) and some are good and it can be hard to tell, especially since there are so many options.
