Title: My Nerdy New Bathroom
Post by: markronz on April 09, 2012, 11:03:08 am
If there's one place I thought might appreciate my nerdy new bathroom I built for myself, I figured it was this forum!   So I thought I'd share a few pictures.  If I had to title this room, it would be "My wife must be a pedophile because she's clearly married to a 12 year old boy"   But seriously, I think I married the right woman to let me do this.

My McDonald's Mario toys, circa 1990

Not to worry, this was a real NES cartridge at some point, but it was a lesser game, not originally a SMB3.

Still to come, one mushroom rug (picture attached), and also some Mario towels.  Also, please ignore the gaming inconsistencies with the placement of the stickers.   Little Mario clearly hit the brick that contained the mushroom, and then went back to the left first before proceeding to the right.  And the star clearly came from earlier in the level and Luigi is chasing it, it did not come from the ? block appearing before it.   :D

Hmm... now I have to show these to my wife and try to get the thumbs up for our 1/2 bath...   ;D

Details son....details.

Those decals?  Paint?  Stenciled?

Also it is ok to cut up a SMB3 game assuming you have backups that actually work on your still working NES.  There are still a crap load of those cartridges floating around.

Looks great, I was stuck on how to decorate my kids bathroom - I might do this too :)

(Not that I wouldn't have it in mine also, but the Mrs wouldn't have it!)

Thanks for the kind words guys.  Here's some details on where I got everything in case anyone else was interested.

Clock (http://www.etsy.com/listing/79325789/vintage-nintendo-super-mario-3-cartridge?ref=sr_gallery_12&ga_search_query=super+mario+clock&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade)

Rug (http://www.etsy.com/listing/90462990/giant-8-bit-super-mario-mushroom-pixel?ref=sr_gallery_42&ga_search_query=mushroom+rug&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade) (although mine is actually going to be a few inches smaller and blue)

Wall Decals (http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/stickers/a6d0/?pfm=Search&t=mario%20decals) - yes they are decals.  I'm not sure I'd be talented enough to paint all that good enough.

Still looking for some outlet / light switch covers, but not having much luck so far finding any I like.

I've been pushing for something like this for at least a year now. Now I can show my wife just how clean it can look.

Last pic.  At least until I make myself a piranha plant garbage can.   ;D  But here's a pic of my towels.   Still trying to keep that clean sort of look, so I didn't want to go the route of a large gaudy Mario beach towel.

That's a better looking towel than originally. I notice you have the TP laying the right way.

I think it looks great. Very tasteful, all round.

Very cool!

The piranha plant coming out of the pipe like that would make me hesitant to get anywhere near that toilet.  ;)

What color blue did you paint?

I personally went with Bird Song Blue (BL4) on this page (http://www.dutchboy.com/colors/families/blues/blues/index.jsp).   I sat there in the store with my screen print from the game for a LONG time, and nothing ever felt like absolutely 100% accurate.   But still, I was pleased with my choice.

You need to paint the toilet.

I second that.  Go green like a Mario pipe.

Although I would actually love to paint the toilet and go all out with this thing, That would be difficult to do, and also irreversible.   That was a big consideration for me should I ever want to resell my house.  Which I am sure I will.

I had my eye on one of those!  The kits are not terribly cheap, but that has not stopped me before.  I bet at some point I will cave in and get one of those!

You can get toilets for under $100 these days.  I say paint the sucker and replace it when you move out.  Whoever buys it will see "new toilet" as a plus.  :)

Don't be afraid to be different!  I had a game room that was similar in theme (painted a BRIGHT glossy neonish color, which I assure you is much more obnoxious).  When we put the house on the market my wife and I kept planning to neutralize the room, but we kept getting tremendous feedback from people looking at the house.  It made the listings stand out; both serious offers in the end were huge fans of the room and requested nothing be changed.  Not saying that is what sold it, but we went above market value and it certainly didn't hurt!   ;D

I know a lot of folks love them some SMB but if I was doing a bathroom like that (and yours is awesome) it would have to be Metroid.  The mod would start with the can as mother brain and would probably go down hill from there.  Nothing like a deuce on Zebes.

I just realized that I never really put a cap on this and posted a video of the finished product with the sound effects and all!  Sorry, still no green toilet, not going to happen.  So aside from the coin block mentioned earlier, which I do still intend on getting, it's all done!  It plays the under ground music when you turn on the lights, it is in the basement after all.   It plays the pipe sound when you do the #1 flush, and evidently you die if you take a #2!

You need to paint the toilet.

When I first bought my house the tub, sink, and toilet were pretty much exactly that color.  Prior owner must have spent a fortune on special order stuff.  The toilet was about 30 years old and had elaborate unobtanium metal parts inside the tank, though, that crumbled around 2003.  I replaced it with a normal toilet and put the regular toilet on the sidewalk with a free sign.  Better believe that sucker was gone in under an hour.  Sink was damaged a few years later so now only the tub remains.

You need to replace the soap with game themed soap, like http://www.etsy.com/listing/82955296/nes-nintendo-controller-soap-green-apple (http://www.etsy.com/listing/82955296/nes-nintendo-controller-soap-green-apple)

Yeah I've seen those before.  I was tempted at first, but I just don't like "decorative soap".  I like functional things.  So having a bar of soap there that you can use technically, but never really do use, bothers me.  So I decided against that.   I would, however, love to find a Super Mario soap dispenser.   Seems like there's Mario memorabilia out there for everything, but I couldn't find a dispenser.  If someone finds one let me know!    :)

How are the sound effects handled? What do you use for the triggers?

There is a seller on ebay named bigdawgsgreetings that offers sound making devices.   Here is one that I used for when the lights get turned on. That specific sound is just triggered by light.
Link (http://www.ebay.com/itm/200s-USB-MP3-LIGHT-ACT-device-voice-music-sound-record-/260936754424?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc10ae4f8#ht_2614wt_1163)
Then here is a 5 button one that I used for the toilet:
Link2 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/200s-USB-MP3-with-5-BUTTONS-device-voice-music-sound-music-record-recorder-/260980430041?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc3a554d9#ht_2055wt_1163)

First, I removed the batteries and I plugged the USB's into a USB to wall outlet converter.  I did this because it's a permanent installation and I didn't want to mess with batteries.   Then I cut off the provided speakers.  I then hacked an old set of PC speakers and I wired the lines that were going to the provided speakers and make them go to the PC speakers instead.   This made the sounds much louder and controllable.   Then for the toilet I hacked off the buttons on the one sound unit.   I wired them up to some leaf switches.  Something similar to these, although any could work.
Link (http://www.ebay.com/itm/15-x-CS-20A-Single-Pole-Single-Throw-SPST-Mini-Stroke-Leaf-Switch-DC-16V-1A-/320958336861?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aba9b8f5d#ht_2096wt_1397)
Then I had to rig up a little contraption inside the toilet box what when the toilet is flushed it would hit the leaf switch and trigger the sounds.   I could post a picture later if there's really a desire to see it.   But it's going to be different for other toilets since the innards can vary based on what type of toilet it is.

But anyway, that's the basics of what all was involved!

Nice.   I think you would want to install an in-wall  Console system playing a Mario game, for those times when you are tied up on the throne.

Gross.

Cool sound installation. Does it cycle the music?

No, it plays the same sounds each time, just one time through for each flush and each time the lights come on.   I wanted to have it play a file from a variety of sound clips, so it would vary each time, but unfortunately with the units I mentioned I used off eBay that's not possible right now.  I did speak with the vendor though and he said that he did intend to release just such a product in a few months.  So perhaps I might add that later.

Nice.   I think you would want to install an in-wall  Console system playing a Mario game, for those times when you are tied up on the throne.

Not the first time I've heard that!   I considered it briefly, but I think I'm at the limit my wife will endure.   Not so sure spending X amount of dollars on a screen/console for the wall would go over too well.   So I probably won't be able to do that one.  :)

To guarantee that nobody else touches your NES controls, toilet gaming should exclusively make use of the power glove.

HardcoreGamer.com just posted an article about my bathroom  (http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2013/03/11/man-builds-bathroom-to-look-and-sound-like-mushroom-kingdom/) yesterday.  Kind of fun so I thought I'd share.  There's a few more pictures on the article that aren't on this thread.  They even included the crude picture of a paratrooper and Luigi...  Guess that's what is bound to happen when you invite a few friends over for drinks and you aren't paying attention!

Just thought I would post one last update about my bathroom now that I've added a couple of fun little things.   I also wanted to mention the question block lamp product, 8 bit lit, currently on Kickstarter right now.   If you haven't seen it yet, here is a link:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1189253589/the-question-block-lamp (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1189253589/the-question-block-lamp)
The initial pledging of the product ends in 40-some hours, so act quick if you want one!  It's a pretty awesome coin block, I actually won one of them through a contest they had.

Here you can see it above my toilet now:

And here's a shot of it in the dark:

Another thing I added was just a little night light.  I couldn't find a Mario themed night light to save my soul, so I decided to just make one:

And here's a shot of it in the dark:

Next I decided to build some green pipes.  The first one I made was to house my toilet brush, which you can see here:

And the final thing I added was a piranha plant for the garbage can.  I must admit, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.   I started out with all this stuff as my supplies:

And it turned out like this in the end!

It's taking a little getting used to because it sort of stares at me when I'm in the bathroom doing my business.  And he looks hungry.  :)

Anyway, just thought I'd share one last update about the bathroom.  I really don't think there's much else I could add to it at this point, so I think this will be my last post about it.  :)
