Title: Hyperspin admin buttons for control cabinet
Post by: nraupach on March 22, 2012, 08:59:45 pm
Can any Hyperspin users tell me what dedicated admin buttons I should include on my control panel?  I'm agonizing over it.

I'm referencing this page on the hyperspin site:
http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=66 (http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=66)

Here's what I think so far:

These are all taken care of with the joystick:

These are all taken care of with the player 1/player 2 buttons (my design uses 8 buttons for each player):

I'm also going to have admin buttons for Mame and other emus:

I've seen people use "tools", "admin", and "reset" buttons.  Are they necessary?  Is there anything I'm missing? Is there anything you'd argue against?

I'd appreciate any insight!

Hmm so if you guys dont have any admin buttons do you use the player buttons and program them with shift keys?

Yes, how do you exit emulators and hyperspin itself without at least an <escape> button?

Just player one start and escape for me. Everything else is accessed by shifted keys, things like exit hyperspin, genre, favorites. The reason I did that is because of the numerous times I would go into my basement when I had people over and see my machine sitting on the windows desktop or people in menus they couldnt find their way out of. Since I've removed all "unnecessary" buttons I'm yet to have that happen.

Like I said I still have functions available but only through my Ipac's shifted keys (I have to hold down player one start and then use another button). I would suggest something similar if you plan to have a lot of button happy people over because trust me if they can see it or find it they will push it regardless of what it says.

Building my first cabinet (bartop) and settled on Paradise Arcades Lono2. The lil guy works ok so far but it is recognized as a joypad controller rather than keyboard commands like an ipac would. Worst case, I could look into Xpadder if I needed a keyboard input.

I have just one dedicated admin button, along with P1 & P2 start+coin.

Anyone think I'll run into problems down the road? I was on the fence on buying an ipac over the lono2.

I use the Lono2 in the Two-Headed Beast. You shouldn't need Xpadder at all. Set up your joystick inputs for Hyperspin's commands and map your MAME (and other emulator) inputs accordingly. The Lono2 also supports a shift function which eliminates the need for dedicated admin buttons.

I threw this same question out there a couple of weeks ago.  I am not in the camp that tries to have absolutely no admin buttons.  If you have the space I say why not have a dedicated button.  Not saying that you need a Genre button and a Favorites button, those can be shifted.

Thanks all, I appreciate the perspectives.  I actually thought I would be missing some good-to-have buttons.  I do have the space and I'll take my chances with the button pushers.  I think I'll stick with these:

IF you have any I think pause, exit and reset are the most used.  Most people I've seen try to use player 1 button 1 to start a game from the menu before realising they should be clicking the bright green flashing START button...
