Title: Need help repairing my Model 1 Genesis
Post by: shess on March 20, 2012, 01:16:17 pm
I've got a Model 1 Genesis with "High Definition Graphics" around the bezel and the s-video mod.  It was working fine after the mod and then I let it sit around for a couple months.  When I went back to it, it would power up, but nothing came on the screen.  I cleaned the cartridge (multiple games), then tried putting alcohol liberally on the contacts and inserting/reinserting it a bunch in the console.  I also tried the credit card+400grit sandpaper trick followed by more alcohol cleaning and it still won't work.  I'd rather not have to mod another Genesis so what else can I check on this one?

Stop sanding the contacts to start with. I only ever cleaned my slot once and I was young and stupid then. IIRC, the contacts are self wiping so unless you stored your Gennie in absolute filth, they'll be OK.

I would move into checking the mod you've done. A bad solder or broken wire could cause your problem.

yeah uh I dunno where the 400 grit came in but that's probably the problem as it more then likely damaged a few traces guy

When I searched for all the ways to clean the slot I came across this, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Cleaning-the-Game-Port/3771/1 (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Cleaning-the-Game-Port/3771/1) , among others.  I'll check out my s-video mod and see if anything broke.
