So a guy in my area is selling one of the 12 in 1 arcade cabinets. He wants to trade it for a ps3 and I just so happen to have one that I don't play. Now my dilemma is should i make the trade and repurpose the cabinet for mame, being that I have all the components to make subtle changes. Or should I pass and build my own cabinet. Been looking around for months for an empty cabinet with no luck. If anyone has any b/g info on these cabinets it would be appreciated.

I wonder if it's designed for the top half being removable for transport or if that's some kind of super-lazy patch job.
I'd suggest getting a good look at the thing inside and out before making a deal. The ugly "splints" and lack of t-molding make me wonder if there are other shortcuts in that build.

Well the cabinet is a legit item. Not homemade. The inner workings arent official (jamma) and the body is kinda small somewat cabaret style. And looked up and it is shipped in pieces so it can be assembled. Its not a build as in custom built. More of a cheap way to peddle the games. The brain is like one of those things you hook straight to a tv. Would prolly repurpose that part for a cocktail in the future.

crumptinite is mostly right ... it is not a "real" cabinet, but rather something cheap built for home use. The games are licensed.
I wouldn't choose to use this as a basis for a MAME build -- it is not all that sturdy -- but, so long as you know going in, have at it!

Are 3.55 PS3s worth a premium? Mine just collects dust.

depends....is ur ps3 a slim or a phatty ? if it's a slim, its a good trade, if its a phatty, i'd keep it. just my 2c :droid

I wouldn't trade mine for it. I've checked out those retail "cabs" and found them to be really cheap. It might be worth $75 or even $100. Unless you really really want it or your PS3 is only worth that much to you I'd wait for something better.
I bought my first fully functional cab for $120...Anything you buy or build yourseld is going to be better quality...even if you have to paint it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll prolly pass because my ps3 is def worth more than that. Back to looling for an empty cab.

sounds like you been on craigslist for north carolina. guy here is trying to do the same. soon as i saw what it was i was like no thanks

I played one of those at target. They are extremely cheap quality. Terrible "toy" stick and buttons with a really low res tv and thin partical board. I wouldnt pay 50 bucks for a brand new one.

late to the party, but that things a hunk of junk, I wouldnt trade my SNES for it.
-
Yeah they really are garbage. They are literally a plug and play game with a little bit more electronics to hook it up to a lcd monitor. Which if the retail price had been more like 50-75 dollars it would have been fair... that would cover the cost of the terrible lcd display and crappy cab. Long story short they only made those for about a year, and it's clear why.

Somebody on here found one of those free on a street corner awaiting garbage pick up. If you can get one for free it's an okay deal but whatever you do with it you'll still be working with crap bones and crap parts.
