Title: Need some advice on Coin Doors
Post by: jammin0 on March 14, 2012, 04:30:59 pm
I am building a cab and recently bought a coin door off of ebay.  I thought I was getting a good deal until it showed up and didn't have the bezel with it.  It is just a single door but I figure that as long as I have to buy the bezel I might as well buy an over/under from somewhere like http://thearcadeboneyard.com/ (http://thearcadeboneyard.com/).  Anyone know that guy or order from there?

Anyway, my question, and I'm a total N00b, are the coin mechs universal?  Should they fit inside another blank door?  I can try and find a stamping or label tonight to see if I can find a brand.  I have seen a few happ coin doors and this doesn't look the same to me.

Anyway, I guess my question is incomplete without pictures or more information so I'll grab those tonight.  Hoping that there are some of the seasoned veterans out there who can answer my question.

Thanks

Yeah, put up a pic of the door......  I've got parts all over the place, I'm sure others do as well.  We can probably fix you up.  ;)

For the most part mechs are universal, yes.  They don't have to look or operate exacty the same, so long as they are that standard size.

Just to add a little bit to what Howard_Casto said in case your unaware, the coin mechs should be the same physical size but they do come in different coin/ token sizes. Just make sure you get the one your looking for, if you want US $0.25 then make sure you don't get one made for tokens etc.

You may already know that but better save then sorry I suppose.

Edit: some are variable and you can adjust what size coin/token you want it to accept, others are hard set.

Thanks Howard and Brad,

Here are the pictures.  It has $.25 mechs in it and everything appears to be in decent shape.  Should be pretty easy to clean everything and slap some paint on it but I'm just missing the bezel.

What do you guys think, does it look pretty standard?

I would be more than happy to pay shipping if anyone is willing to donate to my cause.  :applaud:  I also have a Soul Edge Jamma board that I was trying to sell at one point that I would be more than happy to work out a trade if someone wants that.  I guess I should probably put up a post for that in the right place.  I was originally wanting to sell it but have realized it isn't really worth much unless I get it to the right person.

I'm impressed with everyone's kindness on the board lately so I think I'll throw that up now but dibs for anyone who is willing to trade me for a bezel or stripped door/bezel combo.

You will have a hard time finding the bezel to that without buying another door (they are not normally separated). That one looks like it might be the top half of an over/under door in which case the bezel would be for both halves.

If you want to use that I suggest just carefully cutting a hole to mount it in the wood as is.

Oops, looks like the page you linked will sell the frame, although you need to cut it in half.

So I'm thinking that I can just switch the coin mechs out and get new blank doors.  I already had that thought that I could just route my hole really carefully but I'm not convinced that the hinge will look very good just mounted on the outside there.

I did one with a missing bezel/frame before. It was the sort of thing that was easy to spot if you looked for it, but otherwise it didn't stand out. This is of course assuming a black door on a black cabinet.

I'll vouch for The Arcade Boneyard. I've used the site twice in the past to get parts I needed for a coin door, too.

Well that's an over/under door and you just have the "over" part.  Unfortunately I'm out of that style, I would have just sent you a spare frame if it was the other kind.  ;)

Actually looking at my box-o-junk since I posted this, All I've got left is a nintendo door, some vintage 70's pinball doors and over/under parts.  No frames unfortunately.  Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

The boneyard is a good source they sell good stuff.

If you want to really get a deal though, just be patient with ebay.  My original box of coin doors, which I got 10 years ago, had like 6 doors in it plus parts.  I paid like 50 bucks for them and I've STILL got parts left over.  The key to getting a good deal is to ignore cosmetic wear.

People will sell you a door cheap because it has some rust or scratches.  The thing is, these things are made of thick steel, so as long as there aren't any dents, a quick sanding and little spray paint and most doors look factory fresh.  My box had two "good" doors with a bunch of "crap" ones thrown in.  Since I re-finished them, I've found that the ones I repainted look even better than the ones that didn't need any work.
