Title: Power
Post by: Ophelius on March 11, 2012, 12:53:44 am
For my upcoming cabinet I'm putting in a Sapphire mini PC which doesn't have any way of opening it to re-wire the power button. I was worrying how I was going to power up the arcade without having to manually push the power button on the pc inside the cabinet. But I discovered that in my Bios setting there's an option under Power called 'AC Power Loss' where if I set it to 'Power On', it starts up the computer when I turn on the power bar :) So for those of you who are about to rewire your PC's power switch for this reason, check in the Bios first to see if there's this option.

Secondly, to turn Off the cabinet I figure I can simply turn off the electricity by pulling the plug forcing a brute shutdown. Can this damage the pc in any way? Thanks

Shutting down that way has a tendency to corrupt files.

What's my best option then? Wire a shut down button?

Never mind. Since I wrote my own software, I can simply run this command from the front end:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -f -s -t 0
There's a secret setup screen I can access by tapping certain combinations of buttons, and I can include this shutdown routine in the setup menu. Sweet
