Title: Retro USB Controllers
Post by: cigardude on March 06, 2012, 01:43:09 pm
Hi, I am planning a project but it will be console emulators. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the retro USB controllers. Are they just like a regular mame setup where it is just passing along key strokes? Do you have any recommendations on manufacturers?

Thanks!

They're recognized by windows as a game pad device, not a keyboard or keyboard emulator... But you set up the inputs similiarly in each console emulator.

RetroUSB... I would recommend going with them.

Raphnet has a wider assortment available than RetroUSB (and hopefully Coleco soon if I can figure out the spinner code properly in the near future). Heck, he has an adaptor than can handle 4 (s)NES controllers on a single USB cable.

So, are you working with Raphnet to get a ColecoVision version of his adaptor built?  I had wanted to try this myself but just don't have the programming skills.  I even contacted Raphnet a month or so ago about getting a ColecoVision adaptor project going but got no response.

Are you aware that there is another adaptor for the ColecoVision due for imminent release?  I have been beta-testing it and it works great (including the Super Action controller spinner).  Check it out at: http://home.comcast.net/~tjhafner/Vision-daptor.htm (http://home.comcast.net/~tjhafner/Vision-daptor.htm)

BTW - I have a RetroUSB adaptor for the ColecoVision and it generally works fine, but there is a problem when using the number pad on a SA controller - the keypresses are either not registered or two different keypresses are registered when only pressing one.  On the Vision-daptor all SA keypad presses are correctly registered.  I tried to resolve this issue with RetroUSB but he was unresponsive after a few emails (this was all a good few years ago and he has since discontinued his ColecoVision adaptor).
