Title: Some vertical games cut off. Resize?
Post by: SpamMe on September 25, 2003, 06:35:14 pm
Sorry, I bet this is in a manual or faq somewhere (but I can't find it), but is advancemame the only way to resize vertical games to fit on the screen?

You COULD use the vertical size pot on the monitor... If you have remote monitor adjustment pots on a long ribbon cable, you can mount inside the coin door and twist the knob as needed.

Not exactly an ideal solution, but effective.

Definately not what I had in mind. I'm using a TV and couldn't adjust it as much as would be needed anyhow.

OOh. Yeah, I suppose not. Advmame would probably be a drag, too. So, do you have a TV-out card under some Windows OS? Give the rundown of what you have going (equipmentwise).

Sure :)
Svideo out via radeon 8500 pro, runnin win xp pro. Currently just using the commandline win mame. Not all games, but a handful of them (spy hunter, for instance) are being cut off a lot at the top and bottom. So I guess theres no mame switch like -resizetofit or anything? :(

I believe you COULD get around this by making plain black bezels for the game that squish it in slightly at the top. I am not sure how to add a bezel to a game that doesn't have one, but there must be an easy way, cause I saw that utility that adds "MAME" ones on the side of all the vertical games.

Followup:
OK, here's what's happening (from ATI's support site).

TV output only operates at resolutions up to 800x600 or 1024x768.
Depending on the product you are using TV OUT will only support maximum resolutions of either 800x600 or 1024x768. (1024x768 in my case)
If you enable TV OUT when Windows is configured for a higher resolution (e.g. 1024x768 on a card supporting a maximum TV OUT resolution of 800x600), the television and computer monitor will both switch down to the maximum TV OUT resolution (e.g. 800x600). The desktop size, however, will remain at the previously configured value (e.g. 1024x768).
To navigate the large desktop, move your mouse to the edge of the screen. The display should pan across the desktop in the direction you move the mouse. <---This happens for me

To avoid this effect:

        * Open Display Properties (from Control Panel)
        * Select the Settings tab
        * Reduce the "screen area" to the maximum TV OUT resolution of the card or less

The issue is that a few games are opening at resolutions upwards of 1024x768. Forcing the resolution to 640x480 or 800x600 does the trick :)
