Title: Weird idea about a cocktail table.
Post by: MacGyver on March 01, 2012, 02:47:06 am
Has anyone ever heard of anyone modifying a copy of MAME to double the frame rate of the video output, flip every other frame upside down, and use a two pairs of shutter glasses timed to the frame rate to allow each player on either side of the cocktail table to see the image in it's proper orientation but on the same screen?

Or, modifying a copy of MAME to double each line of the vertical video output, flip every other line upside down, and use a parallax filter above the screen to allow each player on either side of the cocktail table to see the image in it's proper orientation but on the same screen?
 :)

Its not a bad idea. this is pretty much what the sony 3d tv for the ps3 does. two people see there own screen when playing together. alot of the new tvs are starting to do this. tho I think it requires a 120hz tv so you get two 60hz refresh rate screens. I wouldnt mind something like this it might be nice to play with. tho if there are TVs' with this type of techo perhaps one of those could be used as the monitor and get the desired effect.

Why on earth would that be useful?  So you can have two players playing simultaneously on your cocktail while having to wear special glasses?  :dizzy:

I'm all for pushing the envelope of the hobby but the cost benefit analysis of that modification doesn't seem to make the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in doing it worth while.

Maybe we could quadruple the output and allow people to build 4 player panels for one side of a cocktail!

This would have been a good idea for Golden Eye on N64. instead of having 4 split screens quadruple the output and each play gets the whole screen!! no more screen peeping!!!

This may sound preposterous now, but so did playing thousands of arcade games on one machine with accurate controls and force feedback at one time.  I think this is technically valid, somebody just needs to make the interface work.  Maybe something like MAMEhooker could integrate a feature like this.

It seems to me that all the best mods have enable the games to be played in the manner intended.  Monitor rotation, auto joystick selection via a 360 or a servo, all the amazing emus out there to help recreate the way it was in the arcade.  Part of that nostalgia for cocktails was that people had to take turns.  I do really like the split screen hack that is already out there, but there is something about playing a screen flipping turn taking cocktail game.  For that reason I just don't see juice being worth the squeeze.  Doesn't mean it isn't a valid mod but it isn't something that I would want to take the time to integrate.

I would really like to have a room where the floor and walls were lined with RGB LEDs and the ceiling had a kennect type tracking device so I could be Pac-man, that'd be cool, but that doesn't have anything to do with retro gaming.  Not everything has to but if you want an off the wall feature then I recommend you start making it yourself.  Now if you'll excuse me I have to go hotglue 7.3 million LEDs to my garage floor.

it all reminds me of that hardware for the pc that allowed two people to use the same pc at the same time both with there own screens keyboard and mouse. it really came bout when the first dual cores was made since it was if you doubled your memory it was like two pcs in one. at least thats how they explained it. tho now i want build one cab with two screens just with ea screen backs to ea other.

This build (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=108974.0) seems to have fizzled out (or at least the builder's desire to post) but is along those lines.  It'd be nice to see somebody actually finish something like this.
