Title: Compression at horizontal screen edges
Post by: jimmy2x2x on February 29, 2012, 07:38:00 pm
I have compression at both left and right screen edges

Im sure I have seen some guidance on fixing this somewhere, can't seem to find it

I'm not sure what kind of monitor you have but I experience this on mine to a slight degree, especially on the right side.  In my instance it's a linearity problem that usually (if its a digital monitor) can be corrected by the OSD menu... unfortunately my monitor has the adjustment but doesn't actually do anything.  Also its also more of a problem at lower resolutions... higher resolutions don't have this linearity issue on my monitor.

For me its something I live with because there is nothing that can be done.

Not much help but I thought it might be useful info.

I think this is the post you saw:

But I'm afraid it couldn't get fixed by software.

Yep, I've seen this effect before too. Is it severe (like in the post Calamity linked to) or is it fairly subtle? When it's only subtle and only at the very edges of the screen I've found that most of the effect can be masked by having a very slight overscan.

Its not terrible, but I have started to notice it ALL THE TIME now, gives me a slightly drunk sensation!

a little overscan does help, cant find anything in the adjustments to help it

I guess I will live with it for now and keep my eyes peeled for another monitor

Oh no, that's how the sickness starts... ;) You're playing a really fun game and all you can think is "the bottom left corner flickers more than the rest of the screen" or something similar.

I never thought much about H and V linearity until I noticed something odd while playing Shinobi. I think it's the 2nd or 3rd stage (not a hardcore Shinobi fan so I don't know from memory) that has a grid or cross hatched pattern in the background. As it scrolled I noticed that the squares got smaller and bigger depending where they were on the screen. It's also easy to spot vertical linearity problems when you boot up Street Fighter 2 (when the high rise building scrolls down the screen).

I don't know if you can ever get linearity technically perfect but there's definitely a sliding scale between "best" and "worse".
