So I merged all the files correctly using RomLister. I check the "Fighters" box, no clones, no samples, playable and i get a list of 93roms. I put that list into Mala....
It includes some games (not very many) that I dont have. Soul Edge I do not have and yet it is listed in the xml file... what am I doing incorrectly?

romlister doesn't look at what roms you have physically. it just takes all the roms that MAME claims it can work with, and generates a list off your criteria. You're not doing anything incorrectly, other than possibly having some expectations of what the tool does.

If I tell Romlister to get all the fighter games... it gives me the list (says only 93 playable)... is there a way to make Mala use that list and compare it to the roms I do have?
Otherwise should I just go through the 3,000 roms by hand and make my own list?

there is technically a rom scan utility in romlister (check the settings button) but I've heard it is really slow. slow as in start it up and then go to bed slow.
what it does is whittle down the full xml file to just the detected roms that you have, based off the filename of the zip files. it is important here to make sure your mame version matches the actual roms you have.
you're kind of an oddball- most people start with a full set of games and whatever is in the list is already in their rom collection...

Hmm. Ya I just didnt want to deal with 8,000 Roms and then get rid of the games that I dont like :)
I started with about 1600 or so of my favorites, and just DL any I want that I dont currently have. Oh Wells... thanks for all the input.

yeah, that's the inverse of how most people do it.
They grab a torrent to get a full set of roms, then (and this is where I think romlister shines) you create a list of games that will work on your machine (ie, monitor orientation, # of buttons, controls) and then simply spend an afternoon or seven going through that list and finding games that you never knew about and turn out to be a lot of fun. But, it's your journey!
