Title: REAL CAPCOM ROMS $19.95! (really!)
Post by: MameMaster! on September 24, 2003, 03:17:46 pm
http://www.selectsoftusa.com/titles/capcom/info

Greets all....I just visited my local rip off store GameSpot (the most overpriced of all of the chains in my opinion)....any hoo....

There on the shelf was a brand new (literally just put on the shelf) package by a company called selectsoftusa of a Capcom games roms collection.

The reason this appears to be different from all previous compliations is that this is being sold/cross marketed by HanHo games (the maker of the HotRod for your newbies).

....interesting....another MAME like development in the "real" world.

The MameMaster!!  ::)

But then wouldn't it only be valid if you used Hanaho's emulation?

...I don't think so. If you check out the website, it appears as if this stuff is fully XP handicapable out of the box.

I guess you haven't herd of Digital Eclipse then...another company that sells a legal emulator with bundled roms (for PC and console platforms).

Um, the emulator in the Hanaho Capcom games is a modified mame32.

Yeah I don't like the hanho roms for that reason.  They make money off of mame.

I'm suprised the makers of Mame don't sue.

The legality of emulators (Bleem) has been tested in court.... However, Mame's licenese says it can not be used for profit. If they could prove it was Mame32.... it would be pretty open and shut case.

Mame devs gave permission.

Why on earth did they do that? Do they get royalties or something?  ???

No, nobody in their right mind pays for worthless bits of code.  They pay for a game to play. (Keep in mind, to the average computer user the term "rom" is unknown.  They just want to buy 1942.)

The mame devs gave permission because many of them were "bought off" by getting free hotrods.  Although it's a nice gesture, from my perspective I would have saw this as hanho trying the old "I'll give you these beads for new york." ploy and refused.  Also in the beginning capcom, a great supporter of emulation, was partnered with hanho, and thus there was hope for a healthy relationship.  Since then the relationship has been severed.

IIRC, FWIW, the "permission" was given after the fact.  I.E.: Hanaho released the "hanaho emulator", mameDev found out it was mame, complained to hanaho, then hanaho "bought off" MameDev.  [shrug]

Hotrods?!?!?! EWWWWW.

That was seriously short sighted on their part. They could have made a substantial amount from Hanaho. We could have had a few "retired" developers able to work full time on Mame! heh

I read this, and I'm thinking to myself.. Are these guys just making this stuff up as they go along???

God.. where do I start..

First off, HanaHo did not "buy" anyone off with a whole bunch of HotRods to developers. When we released the HotRod in 1999, we got the blessing of the developers because we gave away FREE capcom roms when you buy a Joystick.  At the time this was revolutionary, because MAME was mostly underground and known as a pirate software.  We took a massive amount of heat from Nintendo, but with the help of Capcom, we held our ground.  Our move basically in one swoop, ended the reign of terror by IDSA, and brought legitimacy to MAME. We did NOT make tons of money off MAME, in fact we make zip off MAME. We simply bundled it with the Capcom ROMS that we paid for, and gave you this as a FREE gift from us..

Second, Capcom is not a huge fan of emulation. We have a business relationship with them.. no ties have been severed, our ties with Capcom are as strong if not even stronger than ever before.

Seriously.. I like to see any of you guys go over to Namco, buy their entire line of old classic games, and then give it away to the emulation community for FREE.. When you can do this, I sit down and shut up, but untill then, Please stop spouting nonsense when you don't know what your talking about..  :)

....for my 2 cents...personally I'm impressed with your whole business model (really). You're part of the solution....not the problem.

I think it's great that you've managed to package these games for the public with a legal blessing from Capcom (and in well designed packaging).

I hope that in the future you'll have more opportunities to continue those efforts with other game companies in the future.

If I had the moola....I would have owned one of your cabs a long time ago!

Hey Captain hanahao,

Thanks for clarifying.  If it looks like we are "making it up as we are going along" its indicative of some of the fuzzy lines of communication in the emu/cab building scene.

Are there press releases available on the hanaho site detailing this type of stuff?

We cannot know, what we do not know... what hasn't been shared with us in a forthright manner.

*Shrug*  With that said, it still was pretty cool move on your company's behalf.

This is completely true.  Hanaho contacted MAMEDEV and asked permission first.  After much debate,  we decided it was ok for Hanaho to give away a copy of MAME with the Joystick and licensed roms.  The real value being the joystick and license.
We felt accepting any money could open up legal issues since we would've been 'profiting'.  Hanaho decided to donate several hotrods to the team, but this had no impact on the decision. I'm just bitter that I didn't get one  ;).

Thanks everyone for your support.

No, I'm not mad.. :)

I've belonged to this board since 1998, I just haven't posted in so long.. this board has changed quite a bit since then. I keep meaning to get back here, and keep up communication with everyone here.

Here's our press release pages:
http://www.hanaho.com/press.php

And.. also. If anyone ask.. I wasn't on this team, but HanaHo did produce a Emulation game with 1-3 roms on it.. Streetfighter, 1941, ect.. It was just released, and the distributor is SelectSoft USA.  Cd-roms are about 10 bucks or so, and we created the Emulator in house with our own team, and it doesn't use MAME what-so-ever. However, this is another channel for you to acquire Capcom ROMS legally... and I think 10 bucks is a pretty good deal. :)

Thank guys, and I'll try to get back here more often.
