Title: Thoughts on this deal?
Post by: Well Fed Games on February 14, 2012, 05:30:25 pm
I've got a Pole Position Cockpit (was converted to Crusin USA- no monitor, no board) and a Midway style cocktail (same thing, no board, no monitor) on the line for $225 for both cabinets together. Both are well used but no water damage. Any thoughts on if this is a good deal or not? I should have taken pics....  :dunno

Yeah, I think the haggling is done at this point, but I will see if he will come down to $200. Pretty excited about the cockpit though...

Actually, I'd probably pay the $225 for the two of them. To put it in perspective, someone here locally is selling a working PP Cockpit for $400:

It was in an old op warehouse, and I figured all his stuff would be the same as last year (a lot of classic cabs, Namco, Nintendo, etc.), but most of it was replaced with Golden Tee cabinets, showcases, and dartboards. I guess I wasn't the only one to respond to his original Craigslist and and someone showed up with an empty semi to clear him out. The cocktails were way up in a loft space so we will see how they look up close,  that might factor in final price discussions. This will put me at three project cabs at once, which might be biting off more than I can chew.... oh well!  ;D

Thats a good deal if you want those cabinets. The $250 is a drop in the bucket for your restore costs.

Thanks for the responses. deal hasn't happened yet, but I am hoping for middle of this week.

I see so many "I got this working cab for $50!" type threads on various forums I think I lose context sometimes.

I'd pay $50 for each. They are empty wood boxes and at least one of them is probably hacked up (PP cockpit)

Yeah, I am wresting with it, I know each will take another several hundred dollars to become what I want. I may try to talk him down some more, as I am getting less invested in the idea of taking on two more projects (I have one cab in the garage as it is that needs finished). I am kind of up on the driving cabinet idea, but may just stick to the console wheels I have, as it actually isn't too bad of an experience playing that way.

Wish I had taken pictures!!!  :banghead:

The price is pretty high. If you are just searching for deals than I say keep on searching. If you were wanting those particular cabinet styles then it really isn't bad.

Cockpits are absolute beasts. Make certain you know where it is going and if you can get it there.

Well, I think this deal fell through, the guy is becoming harder and harder to get ahold of. Oh, well, I doubt he would have gone down to $75 a cab, which is what I decided was reasonable for me in the end. I was getting pretty pumped about a driving cab, though...

nonetheless, for the best. I have at least two sweet projects to work on, need to focus time and money on those!

I often wonder how much the right price should be. If the guy wanted $400 initially would you have passed on the deal or offered him $250? I think it's easy to miss a good deal on certain things just because there is an expectation of wheeling and dealing. When I sold my first house, I did a for sale by owner and a couple + their mother walked through and I could tell they loved the house. In fact, I walked in while they were looking in the basement. The wife was smiling and the husband was talking about furniture placement. Once they saw me walk up, her smile instantly went away and they looked around as if they were uninterested.

I told them I had an appraisal done but the results wouldn't be back for a couple weeks. They didn't want to make an offer, and I disclosed to them that I had another person coming by the next day. I know it sounded cliche, but it was true. They said to let them know when the appraisal comes in and they might be interested to make an offer. Well the couple the next day bought the house at the first visit and paid asking price.

For the next couple days, I saw the first young couple driving slowly past the house. A few days later I got a call from the mother, who was the one who advised me they might put an offer in later, to ask if I had received the appraisal. I said no, but the other couple have a contract on the house. The phone went dead silent. After about 10 seconds she said "Oh dear, they are going to be very disappointed".

I did my research and the house was priced right. She screwed up in trying to get her kids a better deal on a house that was already a good deal.

I bought a empty Rally-X cabinet for $100 when I was living in Virginia. Sure people get these cabinets for $20 or free even occasionally, but I never saw one come up the entire time I was in Virginia. I bought it for asking price Sorry you missed out on the cabinets. I thought $250 was a fair price. With enough patience, something else will come up. Good luck.

Yeah, in this case, the cabs were up in a loft, which required a weird platform-lift thing to bring them down to floor level. I think if that hadn't been the case, and I could have made the deal and drove off the same day, it would have simply happened easier. We seemed to have settled on $225 the day of, and I would have paid it then, but he has left me hanging, so I am less motivated. If he actually called me back, I might still pay it, as $75 is much better for an empty cab, but I still prefer to modify a cab than build a new one. Ah, we will see. Maybe I will try to catch him sometime when he is not skiing and we can actually arrange a pick up time. (I already bought a TV to fit one of the cabs, so I kind of jumped the gun).
