Title: Sandable Primer
Post by: ScottEK on February 03, 2012, 12:25:33 am
I'm in the middle of trying to fix up a cabinet I've had for years. I removed the vinyl from the sides but it didn't come off easy and left one of the sides with many small pits.  I've been trying to smooth it out with bondo and hopefully I'll be moving to primer soon.

What kind of roll-on primer should I use?  I think I should sand the primer but most primers at home depot don't mention if they are sandable.

Also, any recommendations for a good roll-on black paint would be appreciated.

Check out the oil- or schellac-based primers like Zinsser. They can usually be sanded the next day. You will have a a hell of a time trying to sand any kind of latex.

I use oil primer with a latex top coat. My first cab had an oil-based top coat...it looks great but it took a month before it fully cured. Dry Time and Cure Time are two very different things...
