Yep, another "will this run that" thread! Anyway, I have a htpc that's not getting used these days, and instead of buying new parts for my cab I'd like to really use the htpc parts. I am going to run mame. 144 w/psx,Daphne,nes, and possibly nulldc. The older parts are a athlon. Dual core 2.1ghz, 2gb ram, ati x1800xl 256mb or Ati 5450 1gb card. I will mostly be playing capcom, neo geo Fighters, golden tee games. Will this be sufficient? Or do I need to upgrade the CPU? Noob out.

Only way to tell for sure is to try it. If the computer is already up and running, it isn't much trouble to copy a folder to it and launch MAME.
Have a look at Final Burn Alpha. It plays the capcom & neo geo games and requires less cpu than MAME.

Don't know about 144 but everything else should run just fine. I have a similar setup and it just works great. (AMD 939x2 2ghz ATI1800 2gb DDR) ;D

I run all the games you described on my AMD Athlon 64 3400+ with either 512 or 1GB ram. I am still on whatever mame came out 5 years ago. Updating now to see if it gives any trouble on 1.44.

Well that's good to know that most everything should run! I'm only a few weeks into MAME, so I'm a real noob! It's definitely something I've had to walk away from a few times! I know the earlier MAME versions require less hardware to run, but I finally got .144 working with the frontend and didn't want to go through all that again, plus like the hsls effects.I will update as I start checking %'s.

Uh...my current MAME cab is running on an ancient Athlon XP 1600 with 1GB of RAM. I don't know of any games that (at least the ones that I play) that won't run just fine on it.
