Have any of you guys tried the demo for the twisted remake on ps3? I expected it to be hard but holy hell the a.i. is ridiculous. They dog pile you and take you out before you have a chance to do any real damage. The controls are floaty as well and I'm not too crazy about the layout and the primary and secondary weapons deal doesn’t always work well. Gone is the tight cornering and spinning 360’s. Whenever someone is behind you hitting you with everything they have you’re screwed. I have played through all of the twisted metal games (yes even 3 and 4) and this is just too damn hard to play and not fun at all in its current state.
The online seems to be down or broken as well. I tried to get online five times before I gave up.
I hope these things are fixed in the retail version. For now I canceled my amazon preorder. I'm eagerly waiting for some e reviews of the full game before I throw down my cash. What a bummer I have been looking forward to this game for months.
-
To be fair Twisted Metal kind of peaked at part 2. Even then we dealt it the terrible digital controls because 3d was in it's infancy.
I guess what I'm saying is imho TM has ALWAYS had broken controls and gameplay.
It would be nice to get another good sequel out of the franchise, but after years of waiting and disappointment I wasn't expecting much.
-
Ya i hear ya on that. I liked head-on and black for ps2 much more than 3 &4 Wich were done by other people since jaffe had moved on. I had some hope for this since david jaffe (who did 1&2) was heading the game. There are going to be some day one patches and I heard the retail version was less difficult but who knows. :dunno
-
That is too bad. Jaffe has been everywhere talking it up lately. I would be down for some more car combat if it was good (always preferred the Vigilante 8 series' style better though).
-
Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to try out the demo and see for myself.
I was always more of a Carmageddon fan though. Twisted Metal just never could fill that void for me.

I was a big fan of Vigilante 8 too, man, I forgot about that game, a friend of mine and I used to play that for HOURS.

Never played Carmageddon. Was that on PC?

It was best on the PC. It later came out for playstation and n64, but those ports sucked.
The game was pretty much a death race sort of game. It was a race, but there were multiple ways to win. You could either finish in first place, or you could also win by destroying your competition before they finish (twisted metal style), or you could just win by killing all the zombies on the map by running them over, lighting them with a flamethrower etc. You could also upgrade your car and claim the cars of the competition you destroyed.

Damn that sounds like a cool game. I remember seeing an ad for it when I used to have a subscription to PC gamer. I used to love Rock n roll racing on SNES too. Not really into that many racing games, but that was the first one I remember with a death race sort of feel to it.
-
Rock and Roll Racing was hands-down awesome.
I'm picky about what kind of racing games I play. Generally like them if car bashing or other destruction is encouraged and slowing down or drifting for every freakin' turn is not part of the game. One time I played NASCAR Thunder, after 5 minutes in I was bored, so then decided to go around the track backwards and try to bash as many cars as possible. :lol
-
I was reading through David jaffe's(twisted metal creator) twitter feed and he said "final game is NOWHERE near as hard as in demo." And he also mentiond that the online has two porblems one of which is already fixed. I've been working with the new controls and there diffrent but eill work. I guess I will be havin' a hell of a time on the 14th. Twisted metal, pizza and lotz of pepsi. Good times, hell to the ya!
-
wow I actually was just playing rock and roll racing like two weeks ago for a whole day pretty much lol.
i remeber it being cool back then so I tried it again and it still was a fun old school game.
-
I never really thought any of the Twisted Metal games were much fun. I remember trying to get into the original (or maybe the first sequel) when it was all the rage and I just didn't understand what all the fuss was about. It didn't hold a candle to Mario Kart. Twisted Metal reminds me of Mortal Kombat, actually. A darker, more violent, but gameplay-wise crappy imitation of some other successful game.

"Olaf wins, Rip comes in second, Viper in a weak third, Tarquinn is in another time zone!"

What successful digitalized 1 on 1 fighting game did MK rip off?

What successful digitalized 1 on 1 fighting game did MK rip off?
Pit-Fighter, of course. ;D

LOL. Pit fighter was neither successful nor 1 on 1 =)

Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know that MK was a rip off of the very successful Reikai Doushi. :lol
Weird Video Games - Reikai Doushi (Arcade) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYCOsYS-jjU#)
I am so gonna have to fire this game up.

I still do that in almost every racing game when I get bored. LOL
TM2 was my favorite. 3 and 4 felt like soulless cash ins. I have a TM2 poster in my game room. I got it for free from a Funcoland when they were closing. I also have a poster for Loaded. LOL

What successful digitalized 1 on 1 fighting game did MK rip off?
You're probably not stupid. Don't pretend to be.

Im not pretending to be anything, its pretty valid question. Can you answer pls?
-
I can. But I won't because you already know exactly which game I am referring to and are just playing dumb.
You don't have to agree with me to know what game I'm talking about. But in response to your little qualification you sneaked in there, using digitized actors does not preclude one developer from imitating another developer's sprite-based game.

I think you might be confusing two games sharing the same genre with one game ripping another off. How many 2d, projectile-based fighters do we have now? Yeah... mk didn't rip off sf.... it was simply the second game in that genre, with sf2 being the first.
I also think you are confusing fun gameplay with bad gameplay. Likewise you are confusing frastratingly precise gameplay with good gameplay.
Let's put it this way.... There are some people that say robotron is better than smashtv. Those people say so because robotron is such a hard game that people have tournaments and marathon sessions just to prove how skilled a gamer is. This does NOT make robotron a superior game, it just makes it a more challenging one. Some people (myself included) would say that it is challenging to the degree that it is no longer fun.
On the other hand, smashtv has everything else going for it. Better graphics, a more interesting storyline, a larger variety of enemies and weapons, ect...
But admittedly it is easier than robotron and you can probably play through it in a couple of hours. Anybody can play a decent game of smashtv though, and pretty much everyone that does will enjoy it, UNLIKE robotron.
And then there are guys like you, who would dismiss smashtv because robotron came out first. This is lame argument man. Gradius was the first of it's kind. It invented an entire genre of space shooters and there are are least two dozen franchises out there. You know what? I've yet to find a really terrible game in the "gradius" genre and most are as good if not BETTER than gradius. This is because konami has been releasing the same game with a different coat of paint since 85, while the genre it created has been evolving.
This is the SF vs MK debate in a nutshell... one is for fighter nerds that insist on every game being so overly complex that the average joe will get his ass handed to him and never play again...the other is for people that like games that are fun, fun to play with other people and are constantly evolving.... i.e. no "mk2 turbo hyper edition 2k13".

I love SmashTV.
It's not the imitation that bothers me. It's not the darkness or the violence either. It's the part about it sucking donkey balls. It's about the darkness and violence being the only "innovation" the game brought to the table (while taking a giant step backwards in gameplay). It's stupid. The characters are extraordinarily lame. And it played and looked like crap. This is what makes it not fun. There have been plenty of other fighting games over the years that I've enjoyed. So I don't think Mortal Kombat is receiving my derision simply because I think there's only room for one fighter in the fighting genre.
Also, I'm talking about two particular games, not two franchises. In fact I think that the Mortal Kombat series has remained retarded throughout the entire franchise. But I haven't played it at all in the last five years. I've also never played SF IV and I probably have played about 30 min total of SF III. So I really don't think I am the person you think I am when it comes to fighters.

Aw dammit. Why does every frickin' thread around here devolve into a MK vs SF debate. Come on guys. ::)

Does that really happen?

Well, it seems like it. :lol

MK was more like the 80th game in that genre. After the success of SFII, there were tons of copycats (Data East's "Fighter's History" is just one example; Neo-Geo's KOF, etc. further examples). The only reason MK stood out was simply that over-the-top violence. I don't hold as much animosity towards the series as shmokes but I do tend to agree that it is just a tad overrated. But I'm only a casual fan of fighters so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
And really, SFII wasn't even the first. Forget that there was a Street Fighter I, there was also Karate Champ, Yie Ar Kung Fu, and, of course, Pit Fighter.
-
...and Reikai Doushi. ;D
-
My point was Street Fighter is pretty much nothing like Mortal Kombat. I believe that World Heroes was much more of a rip off of SF rather than MK. twinjas (hazo/Fuuma) ? CHECK. Twinjas have a projectile, a rising uppercut, and a spinning special attack? DING DING Hell Brocken and Bison could be twin brothers
-
And now we're talking about something real. Unfortunately that's about all I can say on the matter cos I've never seen World Heroes. But I will say that two wrongs don't generally make a right, so I don't think World Heroes would make me feel any differently about Mortal Kombat. But more importantly, it's truly not the copying that concerns me. It's that it's not fun. Remember, the whole point of my post that started this whole thing was that I perceive Twisted Metal to bring nothing more than a dark, violent theme to Mario Kart, but to totally break the gameplay in the process. This reminds me of Mortal Kombat. I was saying that Twisted Metal is to Mario Kart what Mortal Kombat is to Street Fighter. Someone looked at the originals and said, "What if we did that but made it ultra-violent?"
And I love me some violence, too.
-
I see your point but TM is nothing like Mario Kart except for there are vehicles with weapons. What I mean is, Mario Kart is a racing game where you happen to have weapons but your goal is to still get 1st place in the race. In TM there is no race...you just drive around an area and kill each other. No race.
Just sayin.
Unless that is the part you refer to as broken. :)
-
I'm talking about multiplayer Mario Kart
-
FWIW, I listened to the first part of the current Wired Game Life podcast at work today and Jaffe himself compared TM to MK, which I thought was interesting per the conversation in this thread. Then I turned it off because David Jaffe annoys me.
-
Have any of you guys tried the demo for the twisted remake on ps3?
It took a couple of hours to download.
Multiplayer didn't work and it takes a few minutes to jump from one menu to the next.
What a bummer I have been looking forward to this game for months.
I agree. I was hoping this would be the game to get me interested in gaming again, but I'm not even slightly compelled to buy this game.
I might get it when it's under $30, so for now I’ll stick with playing Battlefield 2 and ModNation.
-
I, also, found the Twisted Metal Demo less than stellar. Now Syndicate on the other hand is going to be one heck of a game.

New Syndicate? I heard many months back that the rights to Syndicate were secured and a remake *might* be on it's way, but I didn't hear anything solid. I logged so many hours on that game.
Now looking at it, it seems like they took a tactical strategy game and turned it into a FPS. I dunno. It looks like an awesome FPS, but I have a feeling I am going to miss leading a team of cyborg agents into the fray. At least it looks like the persuadatron is still in the mix. ;)
-
Yea, they are remaking Syndicate into an FPS and Xcom into an FPS. That just sucks. I understand that it's business and they are trying to make money by sticking to what formula sells the most games, but they just took two classic unique games and turned them into typical mindless nonsense. What's next? A Civilization FPS? Damn kids just want to mindlessly play games without thinking. :oldman

How does it have 4.5 stars?
I have no faith in PS3's staring system.
-
Syndicate is not as mindless as you think, grant it it is a FPS. Syndicate is best played as a squad based shooter, so there is some strategy as to what load out you equip, when to help teammates, what to do, etc. Although compared to the old Syndicate, yes it is mindless. But the trailer has Skrillex in it, so it is bound to be a good game :)

Ghost Recon was a fps that reminded me of Syndicate.
