Title: Update, 98% done (3/4/12) "Fighters Classics Collection" slim candy cabinet
Post by: DCsegaDH on January 30, 2012, 02:48:52 pm
Hi guys. I actually have started this project in October, but I didn't take pictures of this project from the start. I don't have much room in my house for a full size cabinet so I decided my cabinet would have to be a slim cabinet, it's just a simple 2 player cabinet. It's kind of like a mix between a Vewlix and a Astro City cabinet. I named it "Fighters Classics Collection" since I has all my favorite fighters on it, plus other games. This cabinet I wanted to make sure it was "Candy Cabinet" inspired, it was the look I was going for. I actually don't like a lot of buttons on my control panel, I decided to keep it simple with 2 joysticks and 7 buttons, no Tron sticks or trackballs on this one. I also used the start buttons as the same input as the coin buttons.

I'm not finished yet, but its playable, I still need side art,cpo art and a monitor bezel. I have filters on Mame, so it looks pretty good compared  I hope you guys enjoy the pictures, I'll get more later.

Monitor: 28 inch Hannspree 16:10 television

PC: Dell motherboard, AMD Athlon dual core 3800 cpu, 2 gb ram, 2 tb hard drive, Geforce 512mb graphics card

Interface: Maxixmus Arcade with an Ipac2 (using d-sub connections, I'll be ready when I connect an Xbox 360 in the future)

Emulators: Mame32 (with Hi Score) version 0.141, Fusion, Model2, ZSNES, NullDC, Future Pinball, and PC

Controls: 2 player setup- 2 Zippy joysticks, 7 (Happ)buttons each, P1/P2 buttons, 1 pinball button each, and pause/exit buttons (hidden under the control panel)

Very nice but agreed, more pics are needed.

This is cool I'd really love to build a viewlix vewlix style cabinet at somepoint. Especially with some of the newer fighting games that have come out that are made with high resolution lcd monitors in mind.

I think I would be hesitant to put the escape key under the control panel though, just seems like a spot where your legs/ knee could hit and ruin the game your playing.

Hate to be a pedantic ---tallywhacker--- but it's spelt vewlix.

haha I've never actually noticed that thanks for pointing it out

EDIT: I guess I don't feel so bad considering everybody else in this thread spelt it viewlix as well

I just ordered control panel art, so I will take some more progress pictures once I get the art on :)

Sorry, I spelt it wrong too, I wasn't thinking too hard about spelling.
I think I would be hesitant to put the escape key under the control panel though, just seems like a spot where your legs/ knee could hit and ruin the game your playing.

Actually I haven't had that problem yet.

Thanks guys

My comment wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, just throwing it out there just in case people try research it and don't get very good results with 'viewlix'

Nice build btw

This is cool. Ive been looking to do something like this. I was thinking of doing a vewlix style cab that had a detachable CP so the base could be used as a LCD TV stand.

Small update: I just order some tinted monitor glass from Tap Plastics, just waiting for that to come in. I will post some more pictures once I get the monitor glass and control panel art on.

maybe i'm being a bit blind, but where is the pc? in the control panel, or tucked in the back?

Thanks ;D The pc is on the bottom, lots of wiring and its a mess. I will post some more pictures when I clean up the wires and maybe add some lights in the window in the bottom.

Update!!  I still need to fix some things and shell windows xp and setup some of the games. I took out the 4-way games, I didn't feel like switching the sticks to 8-way to 4-way. I'm thinking about doing a separate arcade stick for just 4-way games on my other computer. I hope you guys like it, its about 98% done I think.

Hey man, nice work!

Do you have any issues with the cab tipping away from the wall? Seems like, if someone put too much weight on the CP, you might get a little unwanted movement. I only ask because I've done something similar to myself with my own CP. It's a fairly deep panel (13") and the hinges are underneath and at the front, so on rare occasion when I have put weight on the edge, the whole CP top opens up! (needs better closing mechanism...)

Anyway, I love the design: simple and concise. I love the marquee too... it reminded me that I have a 2nd monitor I could use on my own project for just such a purpose!

Looks good. I quite like these vewlix style even though I mostly saw the huge box growing up.

One thing that I see a lot that has been niggling me and I just have to ask  :lol   Why do people add a support for the control panel box to sit on top of rather than incorporate them into the side panels and double as the control panel sides? To me it would make more sense and be more streamlined.

It actually tips a little bit if you really press on the front while standing, but I only play sitting down so it really isn't a problem. If I could do it over I would probably make the cabinet a little bigger and make the control panel a little smaller on the front.

I'm doing a build and using that exact monitor.  What did you end up using for your monitor glass.  You can get tinted glass from Tap Plastics.  Is it is misnomer or do you mean plexiglass?  What kind of tint did you get for it?  I was originally thinking that I would use glass and paint the bezel on the back but i kind of like the tinted look.  Do you have any pictures closer up of the screen behind the glass?

Awesome build by the way.

Did Jeff Hardy help you build it?  ;D

hehe just joking. Looks awesome. Always liked those vewlix cabinets. I think you definitely hit the nail on the head with this home made interpretation.  :)

Thanks man, I used plexiglass from Tap Plastics, It looks really great. I put a paper bezel around the screen too, but you can hardly it. The only problem I have with this tv is that it won't turn on with my Phillips surge protector. I might just buy the Smart Strip instead.

How does it play?  I like the idea but I would be worried about it tipping and that monitor seems SUPER big for how close you stand to it.  Does it feel comfortable to play on?

Looking great pal!

I see now where the all the hardware fits in.

With regard to any tipping over issues, you could always get some square metal tubing and add some "feet", or attach it to the wall.
But if its not an issue just leave it.

Looks nice and clean, and i love those ball tops!  :applaud:

What's the name of the font you used for "Fighters Classics Collection"?  Or did you hand-draw that lettering?  If it's a font... the more I look at it, the more I think I might like to gank that for my project too!  ;D

I used the Sega Astro City font, I thought it would go good with my theme. I couldn't remember where I got mine from, but I found this page with that font and bunch of other Sega fonts. http://www.clavis.ne.jp/~sonic/segasonic/act5/font.htm (http://www.clavis.ne.jp/~sonic/segasonic/act5/font.htm)

What percentage tint did you get for the plexi? Im thinking of using 27% light transmittance but im afraid of going too dark

I'm not sure, but its dark. I got it from Tap Plastics.com, its called solar grey. You can see inside, so I made a paper bezel too.

You have to have ultimate or trilogy MK, and one that no one thinks of but I remember so fondly... Rival Schools on Playstation.

Good list, I have almost the same games, but I also have shmups, beat-em-ups and other games too. I need to buy an extra Xbox 360, so I can have the best of both worlds.

A small portion of my list:

Dreamcast:

Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Guilty Gear X
Zombie Revenge
Fighting Vipers 2
Trizeal
Soul Caliber
Gauntlet Legends
NFL Blitz 2000
Rival Schools 2 (Project Justice)

Playstation:

Fighting Force
Capcom Vs. SNK (this game looks bad on DC, it doesn't have filters)
Rival Schools
MK Trilogy
SF EX 2 Plus
Soul Blade
Tekken 1-3
Einhander
Bloody Roar
Bloody Roar 2

Mame:

MK 1-3 and Ultimate 3
SF Alpha 1-3
SF II
SF II: Hyper Fighting
KOF 94-2004
SSF2: Turbo
Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct 2
Gunbird
Gunbird 2

PC:

Streets of Rage Remake (the best SoR game ever :notworthy:)
Beats of Rage
Super Mario War
Mugen (I need to find a good one)

Xbox 360:

Super Street Fighter IV
Tekken 6
Blaze Blue: Calamity Trigger
Deathsmiles

I need to buy the Mortal Kombat (remake) and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Streets of Rage Remake (the best SoR game ever :notworthy:)
Beats of Rage

Fully agree with you on the SoR remake, one of the many gems i discovered when setting up my pc for my cab. Also, if you like the Beats of Rage games i can recommend 'Night Slashers X' a very enjoyable remake of the old Data East arcade game :)

Nothing this forum likes better than compiling and arguing about lists of the same old games over and over.

 :banghead:

I guess thats the same reason everyone on these forums builds a mame cab in the first place  :laugh2:

The new crop of fighting games like SF IV, MvC2, MK 2011 all are excellent. Also VF5 and SF vs Tekken coming for xbox and PS3 this year!

Heads up on SOR:R - if you are using an IPAC2 on your cab and you have a six-button layout that is set to MAME's P1 default (L_CTRL, L_ALT, SPACE, L_SHIFT, Z, X), you will run into issues with this game as it is hard-coded to terminate on keypress ALT-X.  Bummer, as it really is a stellar game!

my rom set is an old 0.124 and it wont play these games.........was easier to get the snes and genesis then search and update my rom set.
