If you could have a handful of cabinets in your game room (assume you have a game room for this exercise) how many would you have and how would they be set up? Also assume that all cabinets are reproduction so there would be no harm in things like dropping racing games/pedals into a star wars cockpit. Materials are limited to currently existing products, new or used. No price limit, but be reasonable. Dedicated cabinets are allowed.

I currently have two MAME cabs. One is a horizontal two-player with trackball cab. The other is a vertical only 4-way that I'm going to switch to 8-way. I'd like to build a flying game cockpit (already have the joystick and throttle), a gun cabinet, and a cocktail cab. However, the wife says we need a bigger house before these see the light of day.

One vertical for shumps
One driving cab.
One show case cab for Fighter/light gun games.
One horizontal for everything else not covered.
Oh...one touchscreen for bejeweled/jukebox

1. Vertical Mame 8 way for shooters
2. Vertical Mame 4 way games
3. Horizantal Mame fighters
4. Discs of tron
5. Star wars cockpit
6. Driving Mame Cab
7. Defender Stargate
8. Missle command
9. Millipede + centipede
10. Asteroids+ Deluxe
11. Robotron
hmmm plenty more but these are my all time favorites dont want to get greedy maybe illl add more but this be a good start to any game room Retro anyway!!!!
to cut costs you can add a track ball to 4 way vertical mame and take away centipede+millipede trackball in mame horizontal take away missle command and maybe have double stick on your horizontal mame for robotron that would be a total of 8 Cabs so you can play mostly everything just add the approprate sticks in each cab that would be awsome!

I'm currently building a horizontal 2-player franken-baby and a vertical 4-way. In addition to those I love to add -
1. XBOX based driving cabinet using the seat, steering wheel, shifter and dash from a 1972 Datsun 240Z
2. Williams Multi in Stargate cabinet
3. Multi-vector in Space Duel cabinet
4. Virtual Pinball in Corvette cabinet
5. Atari Football 4-player reproduction
6. Star Wars cabinet that has been gutted so I can sit down and make phone calls in it. ;D

Dude, I just won this totally sweet auction... wanna buy it off me (I'm keeping the phone!)

I wish that damn thing was local. I'd rescue it and try to turn it back into it's former self.

I appreciate the offer but this site is "Build Your Own Arcade Controls." I need to find a working Star Wars cabinet and then gut it myself. I'm thinking a sawzall would do the trick. I might be interested in the phone though.

I have 3
4 way vertical with 1 button for classics
8 way horizontal for fighters
spinner vertical with 2 buttons
I have had multiple 4 way, cocktails, bartops, defender layout, and driving cabs but for my needs those 3 arcade games fit the bill.

I have one modular cab (well, control panel, it will have a new custom cab someday when i am less lazy), and it does mostly what I need. I would like to have more though if I had the space. I would need to build a modular panel for each of them though. There really are too many control combinations to keep to a manageable number of cabs for me.
Vertical 27" for shmups
Vertical 19" for classics
Horizontal 25"
Dual sitdown drivers
I think that would do it for me. Although I would get lots of use out of them, I don't think I would get rid of any of the dedicated games in the garage to make room for these.

Twitch... gurgle... gasp.... flatline.

Just move FunSpot into my house please. ;D
Seriously though, I don't think I'd ever feel the need for more than the following:
Vertical PacMan style cab with a 4 way + 1 or 2 buttons
2 player vertical cab for shmups, with a Trackball in the center for Centipede, and a spinner for Arkanoid
A sitdown driving cab
and a 2 player horizontal cab with a fighter layout would cover everything else
Alas, money/time/space limitations pretty much dictate that I have just one cab for the time being. I think I can tastefully cover pretty much everything but racing games and proper controls for Centipede and Arkanoid.
-
vertical 27" for shmups (3 buttons)
horizontal 27" for fighters/beat em ups/other games (7 buttons)
32" horizontal dynamo showcase cabinet for lightgun games
-
Sega new astro city Candy cab vertical monitor for shmups
Sega versus city(two candys back to back linked for head to head) hori for low res fighters/side scrollers
Vewlix for hd fighters/side scrollers
Maybe a classic nintendo style vert for dk, etc

Anything you say?
My current classic standup.
A showcase 4-player/fighter/shooter.
Sitdown racing games.
Skeeball....not virtual but some sexy classic wood design.
Virtual pinball using a big old lcd tv as the playing field.
Touchscreen juke in old antique radio.
-
have only one that has a Horiz-Monitor and Vert-Monitor installed.
I've seen this and it is pretty awesome, Thenasty actually has 2 monitors installed into his 1 cabinet. A switch changes from one screen to the other for the different screen, and the footprint is no bigger than a normal cab.
-
My ideal setup would be one for H games, one for V games, and the same for H and V vector games running a SVGA CRT monitor. Vector games look like crap on std res monitors, but pretty close on regular computer monitors.

+1 Forgot about that one.
My daughter wants me to get a Claw Machine as well. That might actually happen.

If money/space isn't an issue, I'd also have to have a Smash TV setup

Please tell me you didn't sell the Galaga or Tempest bartops!?

if i could have anything, id like to have a cockpit driving cab, a showcase cab and a fighter cab and a dedicated World of Warcraft cab. i started building the WoW cab but space became a concern so now i just have a fighter/WoW and an "everything else" cab :hissy:  :timebomb:

I would like a vertical cab, horizontal cab, sit in driving cab and a kegerator.

I originally read that as FIGHT games. :lol
-
What I have now are:
- a main rig with two-player panel, trackball, and spinner. This can handle at least 95% of digital control horizontal and vertical games. (Most games I don't want the original controls/controls set-ups for.)
- a 27" vert cab with dual U360s.
- a specialty cab with an SW yoke, flanked by a digital flight stick, and an up/down spinner.
The only thing that isn't covered here are two-player, dual-stick games, such as Vs Karate Champ, or more esoterically Inferno (dual, diagonal 4-ways).
If wealthy, I might have dedicated 4-way and 8-way vert cabs. And all my cabinets would be a custom sit-down type made of bamboo, covered by a heavy poly.

I would LOVE a MoCap Boxing game: Mocap Boxing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vlBbGnBFE4#)
As well as some side by side sit down racing games.
