Title: Golden tee '99 playing blind WG U2000 chassis
Post by: searshouse on January 19, 2012, 11:23:03 pm
I have a Golden Tee '99 w/ a WG U2000 chassis that is playing blind.  I have troubleshooted to a point but now I'm stuck.

- On start-up, there is no sound from the tube, chassis, flyback whatsoever. No static noise (tube warming up), no neck glow.
- No visible cracks or oozing from flyback (just dust on it and surrounding components) no hissing or clicking and no arc/snap discharge to ground from  flyback anode
- I've tested most caps, in-circuit (w/ cap analyzer 88), and tested okay.
- I tested power supply side of board by isolating it and testing w/ 75 w light bulb, it stayed lit. Pointing to the deflection side of board?
- Fuse-good.
- B+ voltage @ test point 202 was around 170 vdc-180 (I tested w/ chassis in machine everything still hooked up).
- H.O.T. Q704 - The collector to ground measured 183 vdc. I removed HOT ,and diode tested-  good.

Where to go from here? The CRT? flyback?  My knowledge of electronics is little more than hobby.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  It's been down for over a year, I'm just dying to get the machine back up and running.

Those u2000s had a lot of problems from the get go, from what I hear.

at test point 202, you should read +130 volts.
did you check for bad solder joints in the horizontal deflection circuit. (I had one of these where the horizontal width coil was damaged)

looking at the Randy Fromm Flow chart:
if q704 reads the same as b+, then check voltage at u701 pin 10, it should be 9 volts. if not then test q708,z705 and z702. if pin 10 of u701 is at 9 volts, then test q703 and r728 and check for bad connections on t701 and possibly replace u701.

Hope this helps

Thank you MGB it worked. I tried the Fromm flow chart and my Q704v was the same as B+.  I checked pin 10 of U701 and had no voltage.  So, then tested Z705 (diode test) with machine on and when I touched the leads to the diode I heard static and checked the monitor came on.  Unfortunately, when it came on, the video appeared with stripes and other errors though the game still plays fine w/ sound.  I have attached photos to show the issues.  Some screens w/ text appear fine, while others are messed up. (See photos) Is this a board issue or something else?  If so, how would I go about getting the board tested/repaired?

Again thank you.  At least I'm seeing something on the screen.  I appreciate any help.

Well first, it sounds like the z705 had a bad solder joint so I assume you resoldered that point. I would say your best off hitting more solder joints to fix bad ones.
also in the pics it looks like the colors are washed out, are they? If they are, you may need a cap kit which is probably not a bad idea while working on it anyway.
Also there were two services kits by Wells Gardner for the u2000s, one was to fix a power supply issue and the other for a vertical sweep issue. You may wanna google for some info on that.

It seems weird that the screen problems appear on some screens but not others, I would put the GT board into its test modes to see if there are issues with the board.

I worked on a Golden Tee a couple of months ago (I think it was a 2k), the screen looked pixelated and the colors were terrible. Just to test the monitor, I took my Robocop jamma board, which I keep for testing purposes and hooked it up and verified the monitor worked fine. I then hooked the GT Board back up and went into the test menus and verified there were board issues.
I don't think theres too much you can do with that board though.

I would definitley suggest having a cheap jamma board on hand for testing

Good luck

Mgb,Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. It finally works. While replacing caps, I noticed heat marks around a resistor (r765) right next to z705, it tested bad. After replacing res., the monitor worked great. but, still had striping issues so, I purchased a new jamma off eBay and installed. Now the machine works flawlessly. It seems strange that both issues occurred at the same time, possibly a surge from a lightning strike?. Anyway, thanks again. And thanks to this forum for helping me get my machine back.

No problem,
I'm glad to hear it all worked out.
Congratulations on the repair
