Due to a few different reasons (spare time/awaiting parts/moving house) I

Real slick looking.
Controller and the buttons translucent blue? Nice subtle contrast.
-
I like it! All that black & chrome trim reminds me of a '59 Caddy.
Just add some tail fins and a rear view mirror to hang your fuzzy dice to your cocktail, and you are set! ;)
Seriously, very cool idea!
-
where do you get a translucent blue joystick? that looks SOOO nice.

I've seen them here members.aol.com/n2new/percussion.htm (http://members.aol.com/n2new/percussion.htm), but there may be other places.

so no vertical games?? I'm assuming there is a CP on the other side for player 2? switching seats on a cocktail game is a pain in the butt.. I love the design though!

Yeah there will be vertical games on there, but its just geared towards horizontals. There is another CP on the other side for two player (alternative turn) games.
I'm also toying with the ideal of making the second cp removable on a cable so it can be used as a hand/lap controller on the other side for two player simultaneous games. But I think I may drop this feature as I want the cabinet to look as professional as possible and not that I
-
I love the look of that - definately one of the sleekest cabs ever designed. It's something that won't stick out in a living room.
If I ever finish my upright (slow going -- I'm pathetic with a circular saw and money's a little tight right now) I'm definately aiming for a cocktail for my next project. So when you work on this, let us know how it goes, as it's defintely an inspirational piece.
-
Hm.. so you're going to have one CP on only one of the vertical sides? But when you put vertical games in cocktail mode they flip when they alternate between players.. it just seems like doing it this way kills half the charm/authenticity of having a cocktail..?
Oh, well.. real cocktails don't generally have control panels on adjoining sides either, I guess :P.. as a plus, I'm thinking it would slide into a corner nicely.
PS, though it looks like it would blend in well in a home environment as is.. LOL, that thing looks like a generic video poker with the gold t-molding and no art :o

Nope never side that, both the CPs are on opposite horizontal sides. And as I said in my original post this cocktail cabinet is aimed at horizontal games (and those that are 2-player alternative turn will flip).

Again never said that (which thread have you been reading?). ::)

Gold t-molding? Nope its chrome as mentioned above. There is some art, just very simple, I would have thought it would have fitted in a home environment if it comes out like illustrated above, a bright coloured cabinet with several multi-coloured characters plastered over it won

That cocktail cab looks dynamite!!
-
Is that real or an illustration? If it's just an illustration, you kick ass. Hell if it's real you kick ass. Nice job.
-
I love it. Looks killer.
My upright cocktail was going to look alot like that. As I was building I realized I didn't like looking down and found the upright position suited me better.
Again, beautiful concept.

Nope not real (yet), just a mock up done in 3DS Max.
Thanks for the comments, I

Woops! You're right, I didn't see all those captions.. must have been blinded by all that gold t-molding ::)
Still, though, now I'm stumped.. no vertical games.. on a cocktail.. head.. pressure.. immense hurting..
But seriously, I can't think of any horizontal games that alternate like that either.. I don't recall ever playing any horizontal cocktail games in the wild, at any rate, and never had interest to check MAME. Have you checked MAME on that one? How many are there? ???
-
A lot of the mid 80s conversion games had dip settings for single or dual controls, cocktail or upright. But, a lot of those games were vertical.
Only horizontal cocktail I ever saw in the wild was an Asteroids.
What I am wondering about is the six button layout. The only 6 button games are two player simultaneous fighters, which are not suited for that cabinet.

I'm not going to be building this cocktail to appeal to the masses, its for running some of my personal favs, which in this case are mid-eighties horizontals. But just because its a horiztontal setup doesn't mean vertical games can't be played ::)

I remember that when I used to play Wonder Boy and Shinobi on a cocktail cab they were setup to flip, not sure if that was a hack but I guess it could be done in Mame also.

Putting six buttons on the player one panel just gives the option of playing a few other games if the mood takes me. :)
-
True.. I just can't stand scaled vertical games anymore.. not sure when it happened, it just looks too weird on account of the scanline orientation. I've been hanging around my restoration projects and arcades again too much :-X
In retrospect, though, I suppose horizontal games on a vertical monitor would be much worse :P
-
I'm with everyone here!
Why spend so much money when you have the accuracy to do best!
The cab has a really slick looking and it looks foward to win a Mamey! ;D
Congrats man!
-
yah the only thing i dont like about cocktail cabs is that i dont like the way you have to stare straight down, i prefer the upright cabs because of this.
-
Shinobi and wonderboy flip in cocktail.
sweet design for the cocktail.
have you looked at http://www.digitaltables.co.uk/pictures.htm (http://www.digitaltables.co.uk/pictures.htm) for further inspiration they look cool.
-
Thanks for the link, hadn't seen that site before. I like the legs on those tables but not too sure about the exsposed PC front. But
-
The only horizontal games I know that flip for player two are: defender / stargate / robotron / bubbles. But the way these games enabled cocktail mode was by removing "W-1" jumper from the interface board. I don't know how mame would be able to emulate this feature. ???
-
That is slick GSXR! I await seeing the actual build!

I'm sure there are many more horizontal games that flip for cocktail mode than just those, how about Rally X, Missile Command (though no spinner on this cabinet) Moon Patrol, River Patrol, Berzerk, Track and Field and Wonder Boy just to name a few.
-
Any updates? This cab looks amazing...
-
Nothing as yet, In fact I've not been able to make any progress on my upright either. In the middle of moving house at the moment so the projects have gone on hold. But the good news is that the new place will have an area were I can work on this stuff when ever I want so things will speed up loads. At the moment I have to unpack tools etc each time I want to do anything.
-
I'm annoyed that you're passing this design off as your own, both in these forums and on your website. You could at the very least fully acknowledge the real source of your 'inspiration'.
Please be advised that we have patents pending on the designs of our cabinets (Cocktail & Deluxe) and will enforce any infringement legally if required.

...after seeing a very nice one being sold at arcadetimewarp.com I got thinking. Whilst I liked their cabinet there is no way in the world that I would pay
-
Agreed, tmasman. As long as he's not selling these cocktail based on their design, there isn't a thing they can do about it.

You're off to a really good start at BYOAC.... already threatening legal action on someone who liked the look of your cab and wanted to make his own?
Nice that you have a link to ROM sites. Oh and I'm sure that picture of the gal in the Union Jack bikini you took yourself and didn't find on the internet right?
Welcome.....

Bit late in the day getting back to this, haven

Thanks for the comments :), really wish I could work on my projects but the lack of a workshop and the weather here means nothing is getting done at the moment. Hopefully shouldn't be too long until we move into our new place where I'll have a fulltime workshop for this sort of stuff. ;D
-
wow, that looks incredible. There is some serious skill with 3d programs on this board. It's photorealistic. That gold t-molding looks awesome - I'd love to make a cocktail that would look as good as that! Keep us posted. :)
-
any word on this lately?
-
Afraid not, the house move has taken longer than expected, had a buyer drop out on us >:(. But all back on track now and should be in the new place mid-end Jan and looking forward to a full-time workshop.
Also got a baby on the way now (Yet other cash consuming project!) so I'm planning to get the cabinets finished asap before the little one arrives. ;D
-
have you found a source for those chrome legs? they look really cool.

have you found a source for those chrome legs? they look really cool.
I spotted a nice set in B&Q a while back, in fact they had quite a few different crome ones so I don't think it will be too hard sourcing the.
Also just noticed my last post where I said I would be moved by mid-end Jan, LOL i wish, still waiting to move. I tell you once I finally do move I won't be doing it again in an hurry, I've had so many complications you wouldn't believe. :-\
-
Good luck with your move. Hope you get some free time soon! That cocktail is awesome. Bring it to life
-
do you intend to use black laminated MDF (or something like that?) - do you know where to get it in UK? I only see white melamine at my local DIY place.

I may use laminate, depends on how pleased I am with the paint finish on my main cabinet. Your best bet for laminate is looking through the yellow pages for local sheet plasctic specialists.

bloody hell just surfed over to that www.arcadetimewarp.com
what are they charging?

You know, you gotta love people who see what great cabinets others have created, and then, rather than say: "Hey, I could make one of these to re-live my youth!", they spout: "Hey, I could make lots of these and sell them for serious cash!!!" That Simon person amuses me. While your vision of a cabinet looks like the ones that person is hawking, if it's different enough in design, he can't even touch you with a 'suit. In my honest opinion, I think the arcade time warp cabinet looks kind of gawdy and cheap. It doesn't even have controls for vertical games! It's shown playing Pacman (a vertical game) in a horizontal orientation. Wow. I'm done here.
P. S. If your actual cab looks half as good as the rendering, it'll be pretty sweet. Good job.

I like that wording!

Shouldn't that be "...defend any infringement..." ?

GSXRMovistar, Your use of chrome moulding on your render inspired me to do likewise and ditch the foolish idea of using black.
Not long to completion now:
Not as slick as yours with its controller simplicity, but it's starting to look like a cabinet instead of a black box with holes in it.
Black laminate & brushed stainless & chrome moulding = win.
-
That looks really sweet, have you got glass going on top?
Also where did you pick up your chrome t-molding?
I'm getting seriously annoyed now that I can't get on with any of my cabinet building :( But soon, hopefully soon..... ;D
-
Have ordered grey glass, was quoted AUD$277 by my local glazier, rang around and got it for $100! Will have it next week.
I ordered the t-moulding from Richard at t-molding.com, he sells it for $0.75/ft on his website, but auctions it at a starting price of $0.50/ft on ebay. So I bought 70' (40 for me, 30 for a friend) and had it shipped to Oz. Great guy to deal with.
The moulding still has a protective film on it, when it's removed it looks 10x as shiny!
Have to install one more control panel, then start wiring.
I saw legs like the ones in your render at Bunnings (mega hardware store in Oz) in various lengths, so they shouldn't be too hard to find at all.
-
The pictures don't show ... anybody knows why?
Any news on this project ?

His webpage is down as well.

As is http://www.arcadetimewarp.com
I wonder what put them out of business. I bet it was customer service (or lack thereof). Hopefully it was a copyright lawsuit against them. That would truly be justice.

I really love it and since I'm sinking about build one I would like to review them ...

Hey GSXRMovistar PM sent 8)
Well he hasn't posted in over a month, but it shows he was online earlier this week. He had some neat stuff. We'll see if he comes back to be a contributing member again.

Just popping by, hard to find time for this hobby at the moment but still very interested.
My hosting for my website (www.mamenotover.com) died the other month and I've been trying to sort out a replacement. If I get some free time this weekend I'll stick these pics up on my personal webspace until I get something better in place.

Thanks ... this cocktail is by far the most beautifully I've seen ...
-
GSXRMoviestar that is VERY classy, definately given me a few ideas for colour/theme. Only criticism would be that its a bit square? Top has nice flowing lines but the CP's and the sides just seem a little bit boxy. But dont worry about it (its probably the Oz in me), if it comes out like the pictures it will be Great!!
cheers
Dakka

Did you actually build it ?
Afraid not, like all my other arcade related work its been put on hold. I've given up setting myself dates when I can continue with all this, but it will be done one day. :)
